Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
This week, it's coming to you all the way from the city of San Salvador in El Salvador, a country that we have not visited since 1997.
Yes, that's 29 years since we last played here.
Really looking forward to the gig, obviously, for those very reasons alone, which will be happening later on today, my time.
I'm about seven or eight hours behind you, so by the time we go on stage, you'll all be well tucked up in your bed.
But that's then; this is now: 60 minutes of wonderful music.
I'll explain more after you've heard this.
INXS
So, as you can imagine, travelling the continent of South America involves a lot of flying and a lot of driving, because all the airports are about an hour out of every town.
So that gives me and Mike, our manager, plenty of time, he always travels in my car, to play phone DJ, and we've been doing it all the time we've been down here.
But what we've been playing is more what you might call the alternative side of rock.
So that's what I'm really going to feature on tonight, which is why you heard the opening song from INXS, a band I don't think I've ever played in the 15-plus years I've been doing this wonderful show.
A great band.
The album is Welcome to Wherever You Are, and the song we heard was "Heaven Sent".
Note - Actually Joe has played this very song before in November 2018. He also played 'Need You Tonight' in November 2015 and 'Good Times' (ft. Jimmy Barnes) also in November 2018.
The Tubes
Right, let's go right back to 1979 and an album that was produced by Todd Rundgren.
This is The Tubes.
And before that, wonderful stuff from The Tubes from 1979.
The album is Remote Control, and the song we heard was "TV Is King".
Redd Kross
When I first bought that album back in 1993, I absolutely played it to death.
I was totally intrigued by the fact that, on that song specifically, the vocal sounds like it was sung by John Lennon.
But, in fact, it's not John Lennon; it is Redd Kross.
The album is Phaseshifter, and the song we heard was "Jimmy's Fantasy".
Punishment Of Luxury
So, from San Francisco, where The Tubes were born, all the way to the northeast of England, Newcastle to be precise, this is Punishment of Luxury.
And before that, Punishment of Luxury, coming across all like heavy-metal Sparks.
It is the title track of their complete recordings box set, Poppytalk.
The Cars
Produced by Roy Thomas Baker, best known, of course, for his work with Queen and Be-Bop Deluxe.
That is The Cars, from their 1978 debut album of the same name, with "Moving in Stereo".
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
This week, coming to you all the way from El Salvador in South America.
Coming up, it's going to be Night Time with Killing Joke.
Killing Joke
And before that, absolutely wonderful stuff from 1985.
It is Killing Joke, the album Night Time, and the song we heard was the wonderful "Love Like Blood".
Love And Rockets
Released about a month after the Hysteria album came out back in 1987, that song was played on American radio all through the rest of the year and well into 1988.
Which is great, because they're an English band.
They are Love and Rockets.
The album is Earth, Sun, Moon, and the song we heard was "No New Tale to Tell".
The Psychedelic Furs
Right, to another British band that did really well in the States as well as the UK, of course.
This is The Psychedelic Furs.
And before that, a band that my ex-girlfriend's sister turned me on to back in 1984, and I've never looked back.
I love their albums.
Saw them live.
Wonderful band.
It is The Psychedelic Furs.
The album is Talk Talk Talk, and the song, of course, is the brilliant "Pretty in Pink".
The Cult
I promised a few weeks ago I'd play them more often, sticking to my word.
It is The Cult, from that wonderful album, Electric, with "Wild Flower".
Big Country
Back in the autumn of 1983, when Def Leppard were on a European tour, myself, Phil, Steve, and our then-manager, Peter Mensch, took a three-hour train trip to go and see these guys, and we were not disappointed.
This is Big Country.
And before that, a band once briefly fronted by The Alarm's Mike Peters after the sad passing of Stuart Adamson.
It is Big Country.
A band that we took a six-hour round trip in one of those carriages that looked like something from Murder on the Orient Express to go and see.
A cross-border trip, I believe, from Germany into Switzerland and back.
We got back to our rooms about five o'clock in the morning, and it was well worth it.
It is Big Country, taken from their 1983 album The Crossing, with "In a Big Country".
Note - Having checked a Big Country fan site for 1983 tour dates, they did not play in Switzerland but did do 7 shows in 7 days in Germany from 13th to 19th Oct 1983.
Def Leppard had gigs in Germany from 12th to 17th Oct with only the 15th/19th off. They played in Zurich, Switzerland on 18th October with the 19th a day off. So they "probably" saw Big Country in Stuttgart, Germany on the 19th October 1983.
The Alarm
Representing Wales, and what has been a pretty British show for the most part.
I like that.
It's good.
It's The Alarm, taken from their album Declaration.
The song we heard was a wonderful bit of work called "68 Guns".
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, all the way from El Salvador in South America, that's about it for this particular show.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, all the way from Bogotá in Colombia.
So, until then, I shall leave you with this.
Let's hop over the big pond to New York City.
This is a band called The Mooney Suzuki.
The album and the song are Alive & Amplified.
Until next week, adiós, amigos!
