The Joe Elliott Show - 17th October 2026 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

This week, it is coming to you all the way from Querétaro in Mexico, the first time that we have ever been to this particular part of Mexico.

Really looking forward to it.

It's the first show of our South American tour.

How can we celebrate?

Let's spend 60 minutes listening to some wonderful music.

Check this out, featuring James Williamson, Wayne Kramer and Marquis Ramon.

This is Cherie Curry.

Cherie Currie

What an absolutely rocking way to get the show started!

What have we got there?

We've got a Ramone, we've got an MC5, we've got a Stooge, and we have the lead singer of The Runaways.

That is actually the B-side of a Bandcamp single that was released seven years ago.

They covered, get this, "Leader of the Pack", yes, the old Shangri-Las song.

But that is the B-side, originally featured on The Runaways' debut album back in 1976.

It is "Cherry Bomb".

Ace Frehley

Okay, so the original version of that song was from 1976.

Let's move forward two years to when all four members of KISS released solo albums on exactly the same day, and check out what Ace Frehley was getting up to.

And before that, we heard Ace Frehley from his debut solo album back in 1978, released alongside his three KISS bandmates on the same day.

The song that we heard: "I'm in Need of Love".

Focus

Now, for those of us of a certain age, of a certain vintage, we will remember with great fondness — I certainly do — a wonderful musical TV show called The Old Grey Whistle Test.

Well, the band that we just heard, when they featured on that show, the following week they sold over a hundred thousand albums in seven days.

Unheard of!

Unheard of now, unheard of back then, even in 1974, when it took place.

The band are Focus, from an album of the same name, one of a couple of hit singles that they had in the UK, "Hocus Pocus".

The Goo Goo Dolls

Now, as I announced at the top of the show, Def Leppard are just starting our South American tour, which is basically winding down touring season for us for 2026.

But you may have read on the Planet Rock website that Def Leppard have just announced a 45-date tour of the USA, starting in March, featuring the next couple of bands that we're going to hear, starting off with The Goo Goo Dolls.

And before that, from the 2025 EP Summer Anthem, we heard The Goo Goo Dolls with "Not Goodbye (Close My Eyes)".

The Struts

Yes, it's going to be a fun spring going into summer.

After that, God knows where it will take us.

But from March till July, we are going to be all over the USA with those bands that we just heard.

Those bands are The Struts and The Goo Goo Dolls, and there are The Struts from the album Everybody Wants, with a wonderful bit of work called "Black Swan".

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock, this week coming to you all the way from Querétaro in Mexico.

Coming up, well, having featured Brian May and Roger Taylor over the last few weeks, I think it's time we visited the mothership.

Queen

And before that, we heard two Queen songs back-to-back, because they're actually joined at the hip.

Couldn't split them up, could I?

From 1974's Sheer Heart Attack, we heard "In the Lap of the Gods" and "Stone Cold Crazy".

Deep Purple

I remember when I first heard that song as a young boy, listening to Ian Gillan hit those high notes and thinking, "How the heck does he do that?"

Well, I've come to the conclusion after all this time: with great difficulty!

Rather you than me, Ian.

I know how hard that is to do, but doesn't it sound fantastic?

From 1970, In Rock, that is Deep Purple with "Child in Time".

Judas Priest

I was reading with great sadness, in fairness, this week about the impending retirement of one of the nicest guys in rock.

I'm talking about Ian Hill from Judas Priest.

When Def Leppard toured with those guys back in 1980 — so it's what, 46 years ago — he genuinely was one of the nicest blokes I've ever met in my life, and he remains so.

I know he's a sweetheart.

Take him out of the leather, you'd never know that he was in a rock band.

Such a nice guy!

So I hope he has a fantastic retirement.

In celebration of the fact that it's not the Grim Reaper, but he's just going to put his feet up, put his slippers on, get his pipe out and watch Coronation Street, or whatever you do when you retire as a rock star, here's some Judas Priest.

And before that, we heard Priest from the Sad Wings of Destiny album.

That was my favourite, with a wonderful bit of work called "The Ripper".

Uriah Heep

From that magnificent album, Demons and Wizards, that is Uriah Heep, who, by the looks of it, are looking for a new bass player because apparently their bass player has now joined Judas Priest.

So, interesting dynamic there.

What a brilliant song, though!

It is "Traveller in Time".

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, all the way from Querétaro in Mexico, that's about it for this week.

It's been a real pleasure, as always.

I should be back with you next week at exactly the same time, all the way from El Salvador.

So please don't go anywhere.

Until then, I should leave you with this.

I mentioned earlier on in the show a wonderful British TV show called The Old Grey Whistle Test.

I'm reminded of yet another classic British show that this was the theme tune for: the show is Weekend World.

The band are Mountain, and the song is "Nantucket Sleighride".

Until next week, see ya!

Or, as they say over here, ¡adiós, amigos!
