The Joe Elliott Show - 23rd May 2026 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)
Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. As always, it's a great pleasure to be with you.
We've only got 60 little minutes, so I'm gonna crack on because, in my humble opinion, we have some wonderful music tonight.
Starting off with The Runaways.
The Runaways
Saw them live at the Sheffield Uni with a few mates of mine back in 1976, and if you've ever seen a photograph of them from that time period, you'll understand why the audience was 100% male. But they really could play, following in the footsteps of other successful all-female bands like Fanny.
That is The Runaways from their debut album of the same name, the song that we heard: Cherry Bomb.
Robert Plant
Now we're off to the Black Country for the next couple of tunes because every now and then I like to hear a bit of solo Robert Plant.
And before that, we heard Robert Plant from the late '80s — I can't remember, to be quite honest, whether it was '88 or '89 — but the album is Now and Zen, and the song we heard, featuring some very cool samples of some old classic Led Zeppelin songs, was Tall Cool One.
The Move
It is by far one of the most overlooked songs in that band's catalogue. It is The Move, taken from their anthology album 1966–1972. The song is Do Ya tonight.
Aerosmith
Right, get a grip, everyone.
And before that, we heard Aerosmith from the album Get a Grip with Livin' on the Edge.
Bad Company
This is a very poignant tale of woe there from Bad Company. Not particularly based on any specific person, but it's amazing how accurate it became, even to Steve Clark's sad passing 16 years after that song was released. Just read the narrative and it's there for all to see.
That is from the 1975 album Straight Shooter. It is Bad Company with a wonderful bit of work called Shooting Star.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up: some farmers are gonna get a jolly good telling-off for letting one of his flock run wild on a very famous New York street. And yes, that's the best I could come up with.
Genesis
And before that were Genesis with the title track — and do excuse my intro at the other side of the break — the title track of the album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
Paul McCartney
From one of the greatest writers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
That is Paul McCartney with a song that is right up there with similar work that he's done, like Blackbird, for example. This is a beautiful bit of work. It's from an album called Chaos and Creation in the Backyard — I believe it was 2005 — and the song is Jenny Wren.
The Babys
Right, here's a band that, for just a little while, broke a few hearts. This is The Babys.
And before that, with a singer who was no slouch himself — that singer being John Waite — we just heard The Babys, taken from an album called Broken Heart with Isn't It Time.
Kansas
Now that gentleman has to be a contender for the greatest voice ever committed to tape. Discussions up and down the country, in your favourite watering hole.
Brilliant, brilliant vocal performance by Steve Walsh. He was the singer in Kansas, and they're taken from their album Leftoverture. We just heard a wonderful bit of work called The Wall.
Show Outro
And I'm afraid it is time for me to go. It's been a real pleasure, as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don't go anywhere. Why would you ever want to, anyway?
So until then, I shall leave you with this beauty. I've said it before when I've played this song, but here they are almost out-purpling Deep Purple themselves.
From the album Sweet Fanny Adams, this is Sweet with Set Me Free.
Until next week — see ya.
