Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock."

"I'm just home from a couple of weeks where the band were rehearsing and doing a radio show for an American syndicated station over there."

"This is rehearsing for the summer tour that we're doing with Journey and the Steve Miller Band and occasionally Cheap Trick and Heart and it went really well."

"I'm back, I'm a little jet lagged but I'm happy because we have a fantastic couple of weeks coming up."

"And what I mean by that is tonight's show is part one of a special because Def Leppard just released a song called Just Like '73."

"I thought how cool would it be if i did a show that was all songs from 1973."

"The biggest problem was there's so many of them I couldn't do it in one week."

"So I'll split it into two and as I'm a big fan of what people like to call pop rock we actually are splitting it into pop and rock."

"So the first week is a bit poppier and next week will be a lot rockier."

"So let's get started shall we with one of my favorite ever bands if not my favourite ever band Mott The Hoople."

Mott The Hoople

"So as the dulcet tones of Andy Mackay's saxophone fade off into the distance."

"A all you hardcore Mott The Hoople fans will know that that is the radio edit of that particular song because I literally couldn't get them all in if I didn't play shorter versions."

"That is Mott The Hoople from the album Mott in 1973 with the single edit of All The Way From Memphis."

Roxy Music

"And seeing as I just mentioned Andy Mackay I think maybe we should feature his band."

"This is Roxy Music."

"And before that Roxy Music from the same year of course their second album For Your Pleasure the wonderful Do The Strand."

Queen

"1973 just keeps getting better doesn't it."

"That from their debut album is Queen, wonderful stuff with a song called Keep Yourself Alive."

T. Rex

"Now 1973 saw Mark Bolan and T. Rex release a lot of singles that weren't on albums including the b sides."

"And sometimes those b sides were actually better than the a sides like this one for example."

"and before that we heard T. Rex from the box set 1973 with a fantastic b-side called Sunken Rags."

David Bowie

"The second attempt to that particular song and in my humble opinion a much better one."

"Albeit the original version recorded in 1970 featured Mark Bolan on lead guitar and his playing was so good and so melodic that Mick Ronson copied it note for note on the re-record that turned up three years later on the album Aladdin Sane."

"It is Prettiest Star."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliot Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock celebrating all things 1973 this week."

"Coming up when classical music and rock and roll collide."

ELO

"And before that we heard the Electric Light Orchestra from there second album ELO 2 which did briefly feature Roy Wood but not on that particular song."

"A song that melds classical music and some good old-fashioned Chuck Berry rock and roll."

"The song is Roll Over Beethoven."

Osmonds

"Dare to play, you bet I dare."

"Now that song has been covered by so many rock bands I've actually lost count."

"Most recently by the Black Star Riders but that is the original."

"It is The Osmonds with Crazy Horses."

Wizzard

"So as Roy Wood took his leave of ELO he formed his own band that band was Wizzard."

"And before that we heard Wizzard featuring Roy Wood."

"Wonderful musician who'd been through the ranks of The Move and ELO."

"The album is Wizzard Brew."

"The song we heard Ballpark Incident."

Paul McCartney/Wings

"There's a fantastic live version of that song on this new release by Paul McCartney called One Hand Clapping which is a recording of Wings from the mid 70s that never got released."

"But that is the studio version from the album Band On The Run it is Jet."

The Sweet

"Now I couldn't possibly do a show about 1973 without playing a song from this band specifically because we covered this song on the YEAH! album in 2006."

"This is Sweet."

"And before that same thing another band that were putting out singles that weren't attached to albums."

"In good company with the likes of T. Rex and David Bowie taken from the Lost Singles collection that is Sweet with a song as I mentioned before covered by Def Leppard on the year album we heard Hell Raiser."

Slade

"They were one of the shoutiest loudest and most brilliant bands of the 70s weren't they."

"That's Slade there taken from their Feel The Noise greatest hits."

"It was a standalone single which is why I couldn't find it on one of their albums."

Show Outro

"And that my friend is about it for this week."

"It's been a real pleasure as always."

"I should be back with you next week at exactly the same time with part two of 1973 the rockier side."

"So until then I shall leave you with this."

"I know I played this last week but bear with me."

"imagine the 55 minutes or so of music that we just heard all poured into a bucket and then stirred around a bit and then you pour it out."

"You'd get something like what you're about to hear but this is just a little bit different."

"featuring Tom Morello on guitar this is brand new Def Leppard and Just Like '73."

"Until next week see ya!."
