Show Intro
Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Hey, I got most of my voice back.
I'm not singing in anger till February.
So it's not really that important.
But what is important is the next 60 minutes or so.
Got some very eclectic tunes for you tonight, bit of everything.
Starting off with Public Image Limited.
Public Image Limited
I get he's not everybody's cup of tea, but I actually very much enjoy what he does because he just does what he wants to do.
And occasionally, he does something that really connects.
I think the song that he wrote about the tragic passing of his wife, a song called Hawaii, is one of the greatest things he's ever done.
But this was the first thing he did after the Pistols split.
Goes back all the way to, I think, 1978.
It is from a collection called The Public Image is Rotten.
The song itself, Public Image.
Ghost
Now sticking with the kind of new wave punk thing, here’s an old Stranglers tune, done by one of today’s current artists.
This is Ghost.
And before that, we heard Ghost from an EP album called Phantomime.
Very clever, very clever.
The song is the old Stranglers classic Hanging Around.
Be Bop Deluxe
It's quite obvious to fans of Be Bop Deluxe for it is them that we just heard.
They are one of the earliest influences that they had was David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars.
The intro to that song itself is very reminiscent in style to All the Young Dudes, which was, of course, written by David Bowie and performed by Mott the Hoople.
But that is indeed Be Bop Deluxe from their debut album Axe Victim, with a very Bowie influence in Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus.
Black Sabbath
Now, change in tact totally.
Here’s a couple of songs from the behemoths that they were back in the ‘70s.
Starting with Black Sabbath.
And before that, Black Sabbath with the absolutely wonderful stuff—the title track, in fact, from the album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Deep Purple
From my favorite of their albums.
And I know a few people will say, “Are you kidding me?” because they will be going for Machine Head or In Rock.
But that’s where I came in, and I think a lot of the time, where you come in is where you actually solidify your relationship with the band.
I’ve got a massive amount of love for that particular album.
The album is Fireball by Deep Purple from 1971.
The song The Mule.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we’re gonna get our fingers all sticky with The Rolling Stones.
The Rolling Stones
And before that, The Rolling Stones from the album Sticky Fingers.
Now, I heard a version of this song in 2002 when I went to see The Rolling Stones in LA, and I was actually sat next to Paul Stanley.
I remember the two of us just looking at each other going, “Wow!”
When Ronnie Wood played the solo on this particular song, it was mind-blowing.
But that is the original studio version, featuring Mick Taylor on lead guitar.
It is the Stones with Can't You Hear Me Knocking?
Genesis
Don’t laugh and don’t mock, but I heard that song the other day in an elevator and it made me think, “Oh my goodness, yes, it’s a great song!”
Actually, should give it a spin, and so I did.
It’s Genesis from the album Duke with Turn It On Again.
Cheap Trick
Okay, now it’s time for some bang zoom crazy... dot dot dot dot... hello from Cheap Trick.
And before that, we heard Cheap Trick from the album Bang Zoom Crazy... Hello with No Direction.
Peter Goalby
The album is out this month; that is called Don’t Think It’s Over.
And it is Peter Goalby.
Now, Pete was the singer in Trapeze, but I got to know him when he was the singer in Uriah Heep when they toured with Def Leppard in the States on the Pyromania tour back in 1983.
Now that song also features ex-Heep keyboard player John Sinclair, who’s also a legendary backstage member of Spinal Tap.
And it also features a guitar solo from the wonderful Mick Box.
So, absolutely deserves a spin.
The song is called The Sound of a Nation.
Good luck with the album, Pete!
Show Outro
And that, my friends, is about it for this particular week.
It’s been a real pleasure as always, and yes, I do say it every week because I mean it every week.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
So don’t touch that dial, don’t go anywhere.
Why would you ever want to anyway?
Until then, I shall leave you with this: We started off with a bit of new wave punk, and we’re gonna end with a bit of new wave punk from their debut album in 1977.
This is The Clash with Complete Control.
Until next week, see ya!
