The Joe Elliott Show - 8th February 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)
Show Intro
Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
How are you?
Great to be with you once again.
I've only got one hour, 60 little minutes, but I've got some amazing music for you.
A bit of this, a bit of that, a bit of you know what.
Starting off this week with this wonderful bit of work from The Sweet.
The Sweet
It's amazing when you think back to the 70s how many artists put singles out that were huge hits, but they weren't attached to any specific album.
I'm thinking the likes of David Bowie, T. Rex, Slade, Roxy Music's first hit, Virginia Plain, wasn't even on their debut album.
And likewise, The Sweet, they had plenty as well.
And they're taken from their Lost Singles collection, we just heard a wonderful bit of work called Fox On The Run.
Wilko Johnson/Roger Daltrey
Right, then here's a song from my album of the year way back in, I think it was 2014.
This is Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey.
And before that, we heard Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey, title track of the album Going Back Home, originally recorded, of course, in the mid-70s by Dr. Feelgood.
The Kinks
Now when that song was originally released, it was a Dave Davies solo single, but just a couple of years later and henceforth onwards, it has actually been credited to The Kinks.
So it's either Dave Davies or The Kinks, but in fact, it's kind of both.
And either way, it's brilliant.
It is from their Ultimate Collection, that's The Kinks, of course, with Death Of A Clown.
Jethro Tull
Right, whip out your flute and prepare to stand on one leg.
This is Jethro Tull.
And before that, we heard Jethro Tull from that wonderful album that is Aqualung.
It's their 40th anniversary special edition.
It is, of course, Mother Goose.
Luke Spiller
Now, I've got to be honest, I've only heard this song about 65 times in the three days that I've had it, but what a fantastic bit of work.
I spoke to Luke Spiller just the other day and I said, "Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute, have you guys split?"
And he said, "No, no, no, no, just doing a solo album."
#Thank God for that, because you know me, I love The Struts.
That is solo Luke Spiller.
It's a fantastic bit of work.
I can't recommend it highly enough, it's called Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes And Wine.
What a title.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, some Adolescent Sex with Japan.
Japan
And before that, Japan from their debut album back in 1977, I believe it was.
The album is Adolescent Sex, the song that we heard, Suburban Love.
City Boy
If you're old enough to remember Barclay James Harvest, they were often referred to as the Poor Man's Moody Blues.
In fact, so much so that I actually think they wrote a song of that title at some stage.
And the band that we just heard were often referred to as the Poor Man's Supertramp, which I thought was a little cruel because they definitely had their own sound.
Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, as it happens, that is City Boy from the expanded 2015 re-release of the album of the same name with a wonderful song called Deadly Delicious.
The Damned
Right, prepare yourself for a theatrical extravaganza from a punk band.
Yep, this is The Damned.
And before that, we heard The Damned, as I said in the intro, going completely theatrical.
Now, that song originates back to 1968.
It was originally recorded by Barry Ryan, written by his twin brother Paul, and on the original version, it featured none other than Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones.
But that version dates back to 1985 and is yet another non-album single.
It's a wonderful song.
It is Eloise.
The Stranglers
Now, I saw that band on numerous occasions and they never ever disappointed.
Wonderful stuff there.
From their 1977 debut album, Ratus Norvegicus, that is The Stranglers with Get A Grip On Yourself.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.
Been a real pleasure as always.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don't go anywhere.
So until then, I shall leave you with this, a song once covered by Def Leppard in 2014 for The Art Of McCartney compilation.
This is the original version dating back to 1973.
In the UK, once again, another standalone single, but in the US, it did feature on the album Band On The Run.
This is Paul McCartney and Wings and Helen Wheels.
Until next week, see ya!
