Show Intro
"Evening all and welcome once again to, yes, The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. I've got sixty minutes. one solid hour to play you, in my humble opinion, fantastic tunes tonight. And it is all over the place. It's a little bit like West Ham's back four the other night. And I know I'm bringing on the wrath there of all West Ham fans. Considerably Steve Harris. But I will make it up to him down the road. What have we got to start with tonight. Let's go back to the 70s. One of the greatest pop rock bands there ever was. This is the Sweet."
Sweet
"You look at the history of that band, and especially if you look at the album that I took that song from. And thy had so many hits that weren't actually album tracks. I mean Action was on A Nod And A Wink. But there was a lot of singles they put out were never on albums. So no wonder they infiltrated the English charts so often. they were putting out songs where the only place you could get them was on the 7 inch vinyl. Clever stuff. From the compilation Action The Ultimate Story that is Sweet with the huge hit Teenage Rampage."
The Who
"Now if my digital watch is correct, I'm actually playing this about 10, 10.5 minutes too early. This is The Who."
"And before that we heard The Who 5:15. Actually played it at about 5:04. So there you go. From the album Quadropenia. The Super Deluxe Edition as it happens. We heard 5:15."
Faces
"A few of my Internet buddies were back and forth this week about that song and how wonderful it is and what a contribution that band collectively and individually made to the British music scene. You think about the drummer Kenney Jones. He was in The Small Faces. He was in The Who. And then you've got Ronnie Lane who had a fantastic solo career specifically with the sone How Come. You've got Ronnie Wood. What can you say about Ronnie Wood?. Fantastic artist and a member of The Rolling Stones for 45 years or so. In fact longer. And then you've got Rod Stewart. You've got Ian McLagan who played with The Rolling Stones. As well as the band that we just heard the Faces. They were absolutely amazing. And there a fantastic live version taken from the album Long Player. Their version of the McCartney song Maybe I'm Amazed."
The Easybeats
"And talking of timing. Well here we are a day late and a dollar short. This is The Easybeats."
"And before that The Easybeats. Taken because actually I didn't have any of their albums. But from a fantastic collection called The Best 60s Album In the World Ever. We head a song brilliantly covered once in 1973 by David Bowie on his Pin Ups album, the song Friday On My Mind."
The Move
"One of the greatest melody writers to ever come out of the British music scene. Absolutely stunning stuff. Roy Wood. The band are The Move. It's taken from Movements. Their 30th anniversary edition of the album. The song, a huge hit for them at the time, Fire Brigade."
"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up we're gonna get all Hurdy Gurdy with Steve Hillage."
Steve Hillage
"And before that we heard Steve Hillage from a phenomenal album called L. Came out in 1976. The whole band that played on that album were Utopia. Except of course for Todd Rundgren the guitarist. Who stood to one side to let Steve Hillage be the guitarist. As it was his album. And Todd Rundren produced it instead. It's a fantastic record. The song we just heard a cove rof an old Donovan tune Hurdy Gurdy Man."
Emerson, Lake And Palmer
"I was introduced to that band at a very very young age. By a young kid in my neighbourhood. Who, well I say young, he was three or four years older than me. And his record collection was so much more mature than mine. So he introduced me to the likes of Mountain, and Spooky Tooth. And Free. And the band that we just heard. Emerson, Lake And Palmer from their debut album of the same name we just heard Knife Edge."
Patti Smith
"We seeing as it is that time of year. It would be remiss of me not to play something from this particular record. This is Patti Smith."
"And before that we heard Patti Smith. From the album Easter. Of course because it is and why not. We heard the song 25th Floor."
U2
"That has always been one of my favourite ever U2 songs. And it's great to hear it in a slightly different form. From the album Songs Of Surrender. Where U2 have revisited 40 of their classic tunes and completely redone them. it's a very similar kind of project I suppose to Drastic Symphonies, the upcoming Def Leppard record. Except they've really gone deep and totally re-recorded everything. Whereas what we've done is re-recorded a few things and added an orchestra and stripped everything way back. But both projects are just a way of showing the back catalogue of the band in a completely different light. And some of the stuff on this U2 album really really works. And as I said that one for me really does 'cause it's always been one of my favourites. It is Red Hill Mining Town."
Show Outro
"And that my friends, for this particular show, is about it. Been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
"So until then don't touch that dial and let's keep the Easter theme going for one more tune shall we. We all know the biblical story of what happened at Easter. And this song title just about sum sit up. So until next week here we are. Mott The Hoople and Roll Away The Stone. Until next week see ya!."
