Show Intro
Welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
This week, once again, coming to you all the way from Las Vegas, where Def Leppard are in residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and what a fantastic start we have gotten off to.
Really, really happy with the way it’s going, and I’m also really happy with the song choices this week.
We’ve got some great stuff for you in the next 60 minutes, starting off with this beauty by The Pretty Things.
The Pretty Things
From arguably the first ever concept album, it was released before Tommy.
That is The Pretty Things.
The album is SF Sorrow.
The song we heard was Walking Through My Dreams.
Ian Hunter
Now here is Mr. H with a song that he wrote over 25 years ago.
Has anything changed?
And before that, Ian Hunter from 2001.
What a great album Rant is, but that particular song, lyrically — wow — is it resonating now.
Pretty much more so than even it did 25 years ago.
The song is Morons.
Mick Ronson
Written by a gentleman that he just parted company with.
Yes, that gentleman is, of course, David Bowie.
That is Mick Ronson from his debut album in 1974.
The album is Slaughter on 10th Avenue.
The song we just heard was Growing Up, I’m Fine.
The Rolling Stones
Right then, folks.
Fancy a bowl of goat’s head soup?
Nah, me neither, but I do fancy a bit of the Rolling Stones.
And before that, The Rolling Stones from the deluxe version of their album Goat’s Head Soup with Dancing with Mr. D.
The Move
Once covered by the mighty Cheap Trick, that is The Move, featuring, of course, the most wonderfully talented Mr. Roy Wood.
The album is Looking On.
The song we heard was Brontosaurus.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
This week, once again, coming to you all the way from Las Vegas, where Def Leppard are in residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
Coming up — well, I know I played them last week — but it would have been their fearless leader’s 91st birthday this week.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band
And before that — yes, I know I played them last week — but of course, there’s never an excuse needed to play the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
We just heard them once again there because it would have been Alex’s 91st birthday this week.
From the album Tomorrow Belongs to Me, we heard the most bonkersoid The Tale of the Giant Stone Eater.
Three Dog Night
Well, it would seem that February is as relentless as January when it comes to visitations from the Grim Reaper.
Last week, it was Francis from the Scorpions.
This week, it is Chuck Negron from Three Dog Night, a band not so big in the UK, but they were absolutely massive in America.
I had the pleasure of doing a show with Chuck Negron about 10 years ago, and he was a lovely chap, so I thought I would honour him, as you do, from their Greatest Hits album.
We just heard a song once covered by the Stereophonics, Mama Told Me (Not to Come).
The Who
Now, having just played Three Dog Night, it leads me nicely into what you might call a sliding doors moment that myself and Phil experienced last Saturday when we flew to Los Angeles to play a three-song acoustic set for our publishing company’s 20th anniversary stroke pre-Grammy party.
Also on the bill was Leo Sayer, who wrote the song — which was a big hit in the UK — The Show Must Go On, which was a huge hit in America for Three Dog Night.
Now, also on that bill was CeeLo Green, Grandmaster Flash, John Mellencamp, and Pete Townshend, who did an incredible version of this song.
And before that, we heard The Who from their wonderful 1971 album Who’s Next, with a song that Pete Townshend did a killer version of last Saturday, Behind Blue Eyes.
Sniff 'N' The Tears
From an album that got played to death in the control room at Battery Studios in London back in 1981, when Def Leppard were recording the High ’n’ Dry album.
That is Sniff ’n’ the Tears.
The album is Fickle Heart.
The song we heard — a huge hit for them — Driver’s Seat.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, once again all the way from Las Vegas, is about it for this week.
Been a real pleasure, as always, and I shall be back with you next week, for your pleasure, at exactly the same time.
So don’t go anywhere.
So until then, for your pleasure, this is Roxy Music from the album For Your Pleasure with Editions of You.
Till next week — see ya!
