Show Intro

Evening all and welcome to the very first Joe Elliott Show of 2025.

Christmas done, New Year done, tonight no agenda, just some very eclectic music.

Starting off with ELO.

ELO

From 1975's Face the Music, that is ELO with a lead vocal by Kelly Groucutt. Yes, not Jeff Lynne.

One of the few times he handed over the microphone to somebody else.

It's a great song though. It is "Poker."

Generation X

And just one year later, music would start to change quite drastically.

Two great examples coming up. Starting off with Generation X.

And before that, we heard Generation X from their eponymously titled debut album with "Your Generation."

And as Billy Idol sang, "Don't mean a thing to him."

The Undertones

The last gig I saw just before Christmas was The Undertones at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin.

And I hadn't seen them live since I saw them at the Leicester De Montfort Hall in 1980.

Why I was there, I have no idea. It must have been the day before Def Leppard were playing there.

I can only surmise. But just the other week, they were absolutely incredible.

And the new singer, I say new singer, he's been in the band about ten times longer than Feargal Sharkey ever was.

His name is Paul McLoone.

And I begged him to send me some live stuff.

And that is something that was given to me by the band.

I'm not sure it's actually commercially available. I think they may sell it at their shows.

But it's a fantastic live version of that amazing song, "My Perfect Cousin."

Probably one of the few songs in the world that ever mentions Subbuteo.

Note - Joe was correct. Def Leppard played the same venue on 27th April 1980 with The Undertones playing on 28th April which was day off before the next DL show in Derby on the 29th that ended their first major UK headline tour.

Babe Ruth

I think what he was trying to destroy was what we're going to enjoy right now.

This is Babe Ruth.

And before that, Babe Ruth, a band I saw a couple of times at the Sheffield Top Rank, and they were absolutely magnificent.

The album is First Base. The song we heard was "Wells Fargo."

Paul McCartney

From 1971, it's Paul McCartney.

Well, it actually isn't. It's not a Paul McCartney solo album, and neither is it a Paul McCartney and Wings album.

It is actually credited to Paul and Linda McCartney.

His second release after leaving The Beatles.

Wonderful bit of work there called "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey."

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

The first one of 2025.

Coming up, we're going to make a tumbleweed connection with Elton John.

Elton John

And before that, proving that he too is a pyromaniac, Elton John from Tumbleweed Connection with "Burn Down The Mission."

Rod Stewart

From the first album I ever bought with my own money, and I still have it, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story.

That is Rod Stewart with a fantastic cover of the old Temptations tune, "I Know I'm Losing You."

The Fixx

Okay, so those last two tunes were great examples of early '70s production and performance.

These next couple of songs are more polished '80s style.

Starting with The Fixx.

And before that, The Fix from an amazing album called Reach The Beach.

We heard "One Thing Leads to Another."

The Outfield

Taken from their album Play Deep, that is The Outfield with what was a huge hit for them in America.

I'm not really sure how well it did in the UK. The song is "Your Love."

Show Outro

And that, my friends, for the first show of 2025, is about it for this week.

Been a real pleasure as always.

I should be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don't go anywhere.

Why would you want to? This is the greatest station in the world.

I will leave you with this for now. Back to the '70s once again.

Probably one of the most basic bands that you'll ever hear, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

In fact, it means it's fantastic.

From the album Hello, this is Status Quo with "Caroline."

Until next week. See ya!
