Show Intro
Evening all, welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
How you doing?
Great to be with you once again.
Got 60 minutes — six-zero minutes — of amazing music for you tonight, in my humble opinion.
Starting off with this beauty from Pat Travers.
Pat Travers
What an amazing power trio that band was back in 1976–77.
It is the Pat Travers Band, which featured the brilliant bass playing of Peter “Mars” Cowling, sadly no longer with us, and the wonderful drumming of Nicko McBrain, who would go on to bigger things with Iron Maiden.
But what a great band.
This was the Pat Travers Band.
It is their second album.
From 1977, the album is Making Magic.
The song that we just heard: You Don’t Love Me.
Starz
Now here’s a couple of tunes for you that, just for the sake of convenience, we shall call classic American power pop, starting off with Stars.
They didn’t really make it that big, but they had a couple of great tunes.
One of them we just heard: Cherry Baby.
Eddie Money
Now here’s a nice little coincidence for you.
The first time Def Leppard ever played a stadium in America, in 1980, we were fourth on the bill to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.
But the gentleman that we just heard was on that bill, as he was three years later when Def Leppard headlined their first stadium in San Diego.
He is Eddie Money, and taken from his Greatest Hits: The Sound of Money, we just heard Two Tickets to Paradise.
America
Now, a sort of homecoming.
No, it’s not U2 — it’s America.
And before that, we heard the brilliant acoustic three-piece that are America, from an album called Homecoming.
We heard California Revisited.
Yes
I absolutely love the beginning of that song.
Very Beach Boys indeed.
It is from the 1987 album Big Generator.
It is Rhythm of Love.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we’re going big with a cover of an old classic Motown tune.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
And before that, all 11 minutes and seven seconds of Creedence Clearwater Revival, from the Cosmo’s Factory album back in 1970, I believe it was, with their incredible version of Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through the Grapevine.
Humble Pie
Two of the greatest rock voices of all time, back-to-back right there.
Humbling stuff indeed — from Humble Pie.
What a singer Steve Marriott was.
From the album Eat It, we just heard a song once covered actually by Phil's side band Delta Deep, The song Black Coffee.
The Doors
Hey, here’s a band that I just don’t play often enough.
This is The Doors.
And before that, from the 50th anniversary edition of the album The Doors, we heard the band of the same name with Break On Through (To the Other Side).
The Who
Marvellous stuff there from The Who.
The album is the super deluxe version of The Who Sell Out.
It is the stereo mix of I Can See for Miles.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this particular show.
It’s been a real pleasure, as always.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, but all the way from sunny Southern California, where Def Leppard will be in Los Angeles rehearsing for our February residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
So until then, I shall leave you with this from a band who originated out of the Bay Area, which is about six hours north of L.A. on the Pacific Coast Highway.
The band are Montrose.
From their second album in 1974, this is the title track: Paper Money.
Until next week — see ya.
