The Joe Elliott Show - 14th June 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

How you doing? Great to be with you once again.

Got some great music lined up tonight.

I've only got 60 little minutes, so let's crack on, shall we?

This is Cheap Trick—absolutely one of my favorite bands of all time.

Cheap Trick

That was Cheap Trick from their wonderful album, in fact, it's the title track: Standing On The Edge.

Mike Campbell And The Dirty Knobs

Right then, from Cheap Trick to cheap talk. This is Mike Campbell and his Dirty Knobs.

And before that, Mike Campbell and his Dirty Knobs—who, in fact, did not contact me this week—but I’m playing them anyway. From the album External Combustion, we heard Cheap Talk.

The Psychedelic Furs

Now, although the Def Leppard tour started last month, we did only do the two shows and then had a three-week break. We start up again next week.

Now, when I'm home for a period that long, I'm normally Billy No Mates—nobody bothers me. But this week, text after text after text from some fantastic people.

Including Robin Zander, who we started the show off with—Cheap Trick—who I’m hoping to bump into later on this summer.

But I also got a text from Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, inviting me down to their show in Dublin. Sadly, it’s after I leave for tour, so that’s a no then—bad timing on my part.

So I thought I’d play them instead, and there they were—from the album Forever Now, we just heard the wonderful President Gas.

Doctors Of Madness

And now I really am name-dropping because one of the other texts was from the leader of this particular band. This is the Doctors of Madness.

Before that, we heard the Doctors of Madness, who I saw for the very first time in 1976, opening for Be-Bop Deluxe.

But what we just heard there is from a year later, from their second album Figments of Emancipation. The song is called In Camera, which just so happens to be dedicated to Be-Bop Deluxe.

Peter Gabriel

Spooky or what?

I just love how they recreated the sounds of creaking floorboards using what I suspect is a guitar pick on a piano string—or a guitar string. Either way, it absolutely works a treat.

And what a cool thing to do—and what a cool artist Peter Gabriel is. From his third solo album called Peter Gabriel—his first two were also named the same—we just heard Intruder.

You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up, we're gonna Love It to Death with Alice Cooper.

Alice Cooper

And before that, we heard Alice Cooper from 1971. The album is Love It to Death, and the song we heard was The Ballad of Dwight Frye.

The Rolling Stones

Now, little did we know back in 2012 that that brilliant bit of music we just heard would be the last self-penned tune the Rolling Stones would drop for 11 years. Wow.

But the wait was well worth it because, in 2023, they released the wonderful Hackney Diamonds. But going back those 11 years to 2012, we just heard the Jeff Basker remix of Doom and Gloom.

Queen

Right now, as Fred so beautifully put it: it’s time to get on your bikes and ride! This is Queen.

And before that, we heard Queen from that wonderful album Jazz with Bicycle Race.

The Beach Boys

Well, there was no way I wasn’t gonna play the Beach Boys on my show tonight, because we have to honor the immense talent that was Brian Wilson.

You can argue all you like that they weren’t a rock band, but in my opinion, they absolutely were. They were one of the frontrunners of putting huge harmonies over guitars—as heard in the band we heard before, Queen, who would absolutely acknowledge the Beach Boys as an influence.

So, Brian Wilson—absolute legend. And there, taken from the 50 Big Ones greatest hits, we heard the Beach Boys with Good Vibrations.

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week. It’s been a real pleasure, as always. I should be back with you next week at exactly the same time from a little place called Thackerville in Oklahoma.

So until then, I shall leave you with this from one of the greatest exponents of funk rock that there has ever been.

This was good enough for the Sensational Alex Harvey Band to cover—so it’s good enough for me to play and for you guys to admire. I’m talking about Sly Stone.

From the album Higher, this is Sly and the Family Stone with Dance to the Music.

Until next week—hang on to your heroes while you still have them.
