Joe Elliott On BBC Radio 2 Rock Show

Joe and the band were featured during the BBC Radio 2 Rock Show on Friday 2nd August.

During the regular 'This Week In Rock' segment Joe's 65th birthday was mentioned.

Host Johnnie Walker also mentioned the 1980 New York show with AC/DC on Joe's 21st birthday (including a mistake...) and the band signing to Phonogram.

He did not mentioned the 'Hysteria' album anniversary.

Joe Elliott Archive Interview

A small audio clip of Joe was played from an October 2019 appearance on Sounds of The 70s.

The other show presented by Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2.

The Rock Show with Johnnie Walker - 2nd August 2024 Show Quotes

Johnnie Walker

"Johnnie Walker here."

"Great to connect up with you again."

"Tonight, I'm going to mark a big birthday for Def Leppard's Joe Elliott."

"That's for this week in rock."

"Cherie Currie, former lead singer with pioneering all-girl rockers, which comes out in October."

Johnnie Walker/This Week In Rock

"Time now for this week in rock."

"And we start in 1988."

"Guns N' Roses debut album, Appetite for Destruction, finally made it to number one in the U.S. just over a year after it was released."

"This week in 1979, Led Zeppelin played the first of two sellout shows at Knebworth."

"This week, though, we're going to focus on Def Leppard for several reasons."

"In 1979, the Sheffield band signed to Phonogram Records with an advance of £120,000."

"A year later, on the 1st of August, they made their live debut in the United States when they appeared in New York City, opening for AC/DC."

"It was also singer Joe Elliott's 21st birthday."

"So fast forward to 2024, this actual week, and Joe Elliott turned 65."

"So lots of Def Leppard anniversaries this week."

"Here's Joe speaking to Beyond Sounds for the 70s a while back."

"I asked him if the band were rebellious in those early days."

"Here's what he had to say."

Joe Elliott (2019)

"We genuinely weren't into throwing tellies out the window because at the age that we were excited to do that kind of thing, we couldn't afford it."

"Because if you threw a £120 telly out the window and you were only getting paid 50 quid a week, you kind of went home bust, you know what I mean?."

"So we never really did that."

"We used to probably drink too much and all that kind of stuff, as everybody did."

"And sadly, it affected Steve so badly that he lost his life on it, which is a lesson for everybody, really."

Johnnie Walker

"That's Def Leppard with Rock Brigade, the opening track on their debut album, On Through The Night, which came out in 1980."

"And before that, you heard frontman Joe Elliott talking about the band's early days when he was chatting to me on Sound for the 70s a while back."

"And a very happy birthday to Joe."

"He turned 65 yesterday."

Listen to the show here which is available for 13 more days.
