Show Intro
Evenin’ all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on—you know where—the wonderful Planet Rock.
How y’all doing? Great to be with you, as always.
Got 60 minutes to play you some, in my humble opinion, wonderful music tonight. So... what do you say? Permission to land, sir? You betcha.
This is The Darkness.
The Darkness
It's hard to believe it's 23 years since The Darkness opened for Def Leppard on the X tour around the UK—and they're still going strong.
I know they split and reformed, but they're still going strong.
There isn't a better thing to watch on YouTube than "Justin Hawkins Rides Again", and these solo shows, these speaking engagements that he does, are just flying out the door as well.
The guy’s absolutely on fire—as he should be—because he's a wonderful talent, writes some great songs, as do the whole band.
An amazing band.
The album is Permission to Land.
The song that we just heard: "Black Shuck."
Boomtown Rats
Now, I'm currently in California because the Def Leppard tour resumes tonight — first gig of the second leg.
But right now, let's head back to where I've been living for the last 35–40 years or so — Dublin, in Ireland — and to a band who helped put the place on the map, well after Thin Lizzy broke the ice.
This is The Boomtown Rats.
And before that, we heard The Boomtown Rats, produced, of course, by our old friend Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
It's from their Best Of collection, Back to Boomtown.
The song: "Mary of the 4th Form."
The Pretenders
I saw them live back in 1982 at the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road, and we were auditioning their sound engineer... who we successfully poached.
So, sorry about that, Chrissie!
But we did do some gigs with them just five, six, seven years ago, and they were absolutely wonderful.
Always have been whenever I've seen them live.
They are The Pretenders.
And taken from their second album — which just happens to be called Pretenders II — we heard "Pack It Up."
Blind Faith
Right, well, we all need a little bit of this every now and again.
What is it, I hear you ask?
It’s Blind Faith.
And before that, we heard Blind Faith, who featured the singer on the original version of Gimme Some Lovin’ — Steve Winwood.
He formed that band with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Rick Grech.
They were Blind Faith. The song we heard: "Can’t Find My Way Home."
Terry Reid
Yes, I know, I know — The Joe Elliott Show is rapidly becoming the Joe Elliott Obituary Show — way too often for my liking.
Just a couple of weeks ago it was Dave Cousins from The Strawbs, then it was George Kooymans from Golden Earring, and Ozzy Osbourne on the same day.
And this week, it is Terry Reid — the gentleman who supposedly once turned down Led Zeppelin, which, of course, is not true.
He turned down the opportunity of forming a new band with Jimmy Page, and it wouldn't have been the same thing, because Terry Reid would not have written "Kashmir," "Rock and Roll," "Trampled Underfoot", etc.
But he did suggest John Bonham and Robert Plant, so he was a big part of that band getting together.
He was nicknamed Superlungs — for obvious reasons, because he had a fantastic pair of lungs.
One of his albums was actually called Superlungs.
I almost played a track from there, but I really wanted to go with this one because I think it's just a great performance.
It's a reworking of an old Spencer Davis Group song called "Gimme Some Lovin’."
So — rest in peace, Terry Reid. What an amazing singer he was.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up — some brand-new Alice Cooper.
Alice Cooper
And before that, absolutely brand spanky new Alice Cooper — the original band back together, including on one song a kind of ghost performance from Glen Buxton, who sadly passed away a few years ago.
But the rest of the guys — all back together again.
The album is called The Revenge of Alice Cooper.
The song we heard: "Black Mamba."
Elton John
From one of the greatest double albums ever made — 1973’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road — that is Elton John with "The Ballad of Danny Bailey."
The Who
This next band are currently on their last ever tour of the US, and they may never tour the UK again — which is incredibly sad for a fan like me.
This is The Who.
And before that, we heard The Who — the mighty Who — on their last ever tour, possibly anywhere in the world.
From the Super Deluxe version of the album The Who Sell Out, we heard "I Can See for Miles" — the stereo version, as it happens.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
From one of the greatest rock movies ever made.
It is Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
From the original soundtrack, that is the Tommy Gnosis version of a fantastic tune called "Wicked Little Town."
Sparks
Right then, let’s get all indiscreet, shall we?
This is Sparks.
And before that, we heard Sparks from the album Indiscreet with "In the Future."
Mick Ronson
Well, it says on the label that it's been edited, remixed, and remastered — but I’m not sure about the remix bit.
It sounds exactly the same as it did in 1974 — just maybe a little bit brighter.
It is Mick Ronson, from his debut solo album Slaughter on 10th Avenue, with a song co-written with David Bowie: "Hey Ma, Get Papa."
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.
And I just realized — I didn’t even tell you where I was at the top of the show!
I'm actually in Lincoln, not Lincolnshire — Lincoln, California.
But next week, I will be in Springfield, Illinois.
So, until then, I shall leave you with this — and what a great way to end.
From the album By Your Side, this is The Black Crowes with "Kickin’ My Heart Around."
Till next week — see ya.
