Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show.
Right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
How are you? Great to be with you once again.
Tonight is a very bittersweet show.
We're celebrating tonight—we're celebrating some great stuff, we're celebrating some great music.
But it's also, I say bittersweet, because 32 years ago this week sees the passing of the late, great Mick Ronson.
So, I'm going to be featuring a lot of songs that he featured on himself, starting off with this absolute beaut from Ian Hunter's debut album back in 1975.
Ian Hunter
Yep, those guys could rock.
From his eponymously titled album in 1975, that is Ian Hunter featuring Mick Ronson, who will pop in and out of tonight’s show pretty frequently.
The song we heard: I Get So Excited.
Bad Company
Another great guitarist who once worked with Ian Hunter is, of course, Mick Ralphs.
And Mick Ralphs we shall celebrate now, along with his cohorts Simon Kirke, Boz Burrell, and the wonderful Paul Rodgers, because it is official:
Bad Company are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2025!
So let’s celebrate. Here’s some Bad Company.
And before that, from their third album, we heard Bad Company with the title track Run with the Pack.
So, congratulations to both Joe Cocker and to Bad Company.
Joe Cocker
Another artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year is the incomparable Mr. Joe Cocker—certainly the best set of pipes to ever come out of Sheffield.
Absolutely fantastic stuff.
Taken from his Ultimate Collection, we heard Delta Lady.
Elton John
Right here again, featuring Mick Ronson, is Elton John.
It sat locked away in the vaults for over 25 years, finally seeing an official release sometime in the mid-90s.
That is the title track from Elton John's 1971 album Madman Across the Water.
This particular version featuring the late, great Mick Ronson.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up: some more memories of Ronno.
Mick Ronson
And before that, from—I think—1990, the album is a posthumous release of Mick Ronson's work.
The album is called Hard Life, taken from when Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter were touring their joint album,
Which was YUI Orta at the time.
That is the updated version of one of Mick’s most brilliant signature tunes:
"Slaughter on 10th Avenue."
Mick Ronson Memorial Concert
Now, imagine being the recipient of a phone call from Maggie Ronson—Mick’s sister—asking if myself and Phil would like to take part in a memorial show that she was putting together at the Labatts Apollo.
That would happen exactly one year to the day after Mick’s passing.
Oh, and by the way—you get to play with Woody Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder, the original Spiders from Mars rhythm section.
Well, you can imagine how quickly the phrase, "Oh yes please, Maggie!" shot out of my mouth.
Because to this day, it is still one of my most treasured musical moments:
To be on stage with Phil, performing with two guys who hadn’t played on that stage together since the 3rd of July 1973—
When David Bowie effectively split the Spiders from Mars live on stage.
It was definitely hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck stuff.
And as for Phil—wow.
All I can say is: did he channel Mick Ronson, or did he channel Mick Ronson?
He had Maggie and Mick’s widow Susie in tears when he played the solo to the song that we just heard.
Originally featured on Ziggy Stardust, it is the memorial show version of "Moonage Daydream."
Ellen Foley
Right then—over to Mick Ronson the producer.
This is Ellen Foley, from her 1979 debut album produced by Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter.
That is Ellen Foley, the album is Night Out.
This song? A great cover of an old Stones tune: "Stupid Girl."
Show Outro
And that, my friends, is about it for this week.
It’s been a real pleasure, as always.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don’t go anywhere.
So until then, I’d just like to say once again:
Congratulations to Joe Cocker and to Bad Company for getting inducted into this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
And thank you for indulging my Mick Ronson superfandom.
I just wanted to show the depth and breadth of his work — that he has done with so many artists throughout his career.
And guess what? I didn’t even play one David Bowie recording.
Go figure!
So, till next week I shall leave you with this:
The one and only song that was ever released that featured Mick Ronson in this particular band from 1974.
This is Mott The Hoople, with a very appropriately titled, if you’re going to one tonight, Saturday Gigs."
Until next week—see ya.
