Show Intro
"Evening all, welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming to you this week all the way from Dublin in Ireland. Yes, I'm finally home after running around the States for the last seven or eight months I've finally got my feet in what I like to call home territory. And boy does it feel good. Now what have we got lined up for you tonight. Well in my humble opinion we have sixty minutes of some wonderful music. Starting off with this epic which takes us all the way back to what was then East Germany. This is Lone Star."
Lone Star
"I saw that band when they came through Sheffield in 1977 promoting their then new album. With their brand new singer John Sloman who has an absolutely phenomenal voice. The album is Firing On All Six. The band is Lone Star. The song that we just heard, the opening track, The Bells Of Berlin."
The Who
"And now to a band who never did anything on the cheap side. Except maybe for this song. This is The Who."
"And before that we heard The Who from that wonderful album in 1971 that is Who's Next. The song we heard Bargain."
KISS
"I spent the last couple of very jet lagged days watching some ridiculous stuff. Including, with my little ones, 'cause it was pitch black and we all thought it should have been morning, Scooby Doo Meets KISS. And it is as ridiculous as it sounds, but it's very very entertaining. I've got to say. I didn't even know it existed. It just popped up on the TV. But it put KISS back on to my radar. Not that they are ever far away to be quite honest. Love the band. And from that album specifically. The greatest thing they ever made I think. 1976 is the year. The album is Destroyer. The song that we just heard which actually doesn't feature in the film. Great Expectations."
Chicken Shack
"Though nothing will probably ever be as bad as 2016 was, the month of December always seems to be a crappy time for rock fatalities. In one form or another. And that pesky grim reaper is back round again. So all I can say is that once we said Hi to Christine Perfect and we said goodbye to Christine Perfect. So we could welcome Christine McVie who we now say goodbye to Christine McVie."
"And before that the band she was in before the Mac. Chicken Shack from I think 1968. A cover of an old classic blues song called I'd Rather Go Blind. She's gonna be missed terribly by her family and her band mates. And all her fans. Rest in peace Songbird, Christine McVie."
Fleetwood Mac
"Yes terribly terribly sad news when it broke a few days ago that Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac had passed away at the age of 79. Now i'm starting to understand and learn and realise that the age 79 is probably above average or somebody to die. So why is it such a shock?. Well for me specifically I think it's the fact that I tend to remember people the way that I discovered them. So for me Christine McVie will always be early to mid 30s. But then all of a sudden you realise she's almost 80 and then she's gone. And it's just so terribly terribly sad. But didn't she leave behind an absolutely phenomenal body of work. Great singing and great writing. Two examples of which we just heard. From the album that is Rumours. Fantastic album from 1977. We just heard what became her nickname, Songbird."
"You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up we're gonna be paying tribute to yet another fallen hero. Gone 21 years this week."
George Harrison
"And before that we heard George Harrison from that wonderful album that is All Things Must Pass. George Harrison gone 21 years this week. We just heard the mighty Wah Wah."
Sparks
"Well lucky for us they're still around. They being Ron and Russsel Mayal and their band Sparks. In 1974 from the album Kimono My House. We just heard Hasta Manana Monsieu."
Jet
"Right let's lighten things up a little bit shall we. Not to be confused with the Australian band of the same name. This is Jet."
"And before that Jet UK as they have to be called because there is an Australian band of the same name. But this crowd were around in the mid 70s. I think they opened for Hunter/Ronson when I saw them in '75. They featured David O'List on guitar who was once almost a member of Roxy Music. Peter Oxendale on keyboards who went on to play with Ian Hunter's Overnight Angels. I think he was also in Pilot maybe. He definitely played with Frankie Goes To Hollywood. And also Andy Ellison who was in John's Children with Marc Bolan for a little while. The bass played from Sparx. There's a real mishmash of people. The album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker. And its the title track of a box set called Nothing To Do With Us."
Electric Light Orchestra
"Absolutely marvellous stuff there from E.L.O. featuring of course the very wonderfully talented Mr. Jeff Lynne. And some fantastic drumming there from Bev Bevan there once from The Move. Of who Jeff Lynne was in with Roy Wood for a little while. And Roy Wood was in E.L.O. with Jeff Lynne for a little while. Quite confusing isn't it. But from the album Face The Music a bit of work called Poker."
Show Outro
"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. Albeit like last week tinged with a certain amount of sadness. But at the end of the day the music always wins. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
"So until then I'm gonna leave you with this. And I'm gonna dedicate it to a very good friend of mine called Colin who I started working with in a factory called Osbournes on the very same day back in 1975. This week he just retired. Something I hope that I never do. But when we met and we became friends he introduced me to this next band. I introduced him to Montrose. He introduced me to UFO. And here they are from their 1974 album Phenomenon. This is Doctor Doctor. Happy retirement Colin. Everybody else till next week See ya!.
