Show Intro
Evening, my fellow music lovers, and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
How are you?
Great to be with you again.
What have we got tonight?
Sixty minutes of, in my humble opinion, some wonderful music this week.
We're gonna start off with this beauty from The Next Band.
The Next Band
Those are the guys that absolutely, 100%, inspired a fledgling Def Leppard to go and record our first ever EP.
Yes, it's The Next Band.
They were from Grantham.
They moved to the metropolis that is Sheffield to try and break into the music industry.
And we saw them quite often down The Wapentake, which was a pub underneath the Grosvenor House Hotel in the centre of Sheffield.
They were a three-piece power trio.
They looked like Rush, but they sounded a bit like UFO, and we thought they were fantastic.
And they would all eventually go on to bigger and better things.
Partially due to my big mouth backstage at Reading in 1980, when Brian Robertson asked me, “Did I know any good guitarists?”
And I just pointed at John Lockton, the guitarist from The Next Band, and said, "He's pretty good."
And then ten minutes later, Rocky, the bass player, came up to me and said, "Thanks for that — John just joined Wild Horses."
But Rocky would go on to join Michael Schenker's band.
And Frank Noon, the drummer, would go on to play with Waysted and Bernie Tormé.
Who was actually my next-door neighbour when I lived in London in 1981.
And he was my wedding photographer 20-odd years ago as well.
So bigger and better things did come of that band.
But they did make a great four-track EP in the same studios — Fairview Studios — where Def Leppard recorded.
And like I said, they were the inspiration to get us started.
So we are forever grateful to The Next Band.
And the song that we just heard: "Never on a Win."
Soundgarden
Right then, from Grantham, let's head over to Seattle.
This is Soundgarden.
And before that, we heard Soundgarden with a song that had totally fallen off my radar.
Until I just watched an episode of The Last of Us.
And then it was — I thought — “Wow, yeah, that needs a spin.”
So there it is, it's just got its spin.
From the album Down On The Upside, we just heard: "Burden In My Hand."
Foo Fighters
From the final album that featured the wonderfully talented Taylor Hawkins — that is, the Foo Fighters.
The album — what a great bit of work it is as well — Medicine At Midnight.
The song we heard: "Making A Fire."
Ghost
Right, well, congratulations to Tobias and his faceless ghouls for having a number one album on both sides of the Atlantic.
This is Ghost.
And before that, we heard Ghost — flying the flag for rock music in the regular charts.
If you like — number one in the UK and number one in the USA as well.
The album is Impera,
The song that we just heard: "Guiding Lights."
Rick Derringer
Yeah, I thought we were going to have a Grim Reaper–free show this week, but right at the last minute I heard the news that Rick Derringer had passed away.
Now, not the most well-known musician on this side of the Atlantic, but he was very well respected in the States.
He was more recently in Cyndi Lauper's band.
But he goes all the way back to the '60s with a band called The McCoys, who had a huge hit with a song called "Hang On Sloopy."
And in between, he worked with the likes of Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter.
And of course, he had that huge hit in the States with the song that we just heard: "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo."
So rock in peace, Rick Derringer.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we're going to get all windy and weathering with Genesis.
Genesis
And before that, we heard Genesis from that wonderful album that is Wind And Wuthering,
With "Eleventh Earl Of Mar."
Jethro Tull
I know I've mentioned this in the past, so do forgive me if you've heard it before.
But I will never forget my mom coming back from town with a gift for me.
And it was a five-track, seven-inch single.
You have to imagine — it’s like one side of an LP on a seven-inch disc.
It was magnificent.
And she knew I liked the band — who are Jethro Tull.
It’s one of those things — it was a sampler really, from the Living In The Past collection.
And I still play it to this day.
Well, I play the entire album in fairness,
But those five songs resonate more so than anything else because of the fact that it was a gift from my mum.
And I thought I would play a song tonight.
So there you go, from the Living in the Past collection,
We just heard Jethro Tull there with "Life’s A Long Song".
One of my favourite songs that they’ve ever done.
Montrose
Now here’s a couple of really cool instrumental tracks, starting off with Montrose.
And before that — Montrose from 1974, their second album Paper Money.
The tune we heard: "Starliner."
Ace Frehley
Yeah — who needs a singer anyway?
Yeah, that is Ace Frehley from his debut solo album back in 1978,
Released on exactly the same day as his fellow compatriots from KISS.
All released their first-ever solo albums.
The song that we just heard: "Fractured Mirror."
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.
Been a real pleasure, as always.
And I know I say it every week, but I mean it every week.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
So until then, I shall leave you with this from a band who featured one of the most energetic frontmen I have ever seen live.
Absolutely wonderful — sadly no longer with us.
I’m talking about Mr. Barrie Masters.
This is Eddie and the Hot Rods with "Do Anything You Wanna Do."
Until next week — see ya.
