Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on Yes You Know Where.
The wonderful Planet Rock, how are ya? Great to be with you once again.
We do only have, however, the 60 little minutes, so let's crack on.
On this weekend, where the clocks go forward, this song seems somewhat appropriate.
This is UFO.
UFO
I suppose when I think about it, you actually will be turning them on earlier in the morning, but at least we can turn them off later at night, which for me is great.
I way prefer lighter evenings, I have to say.
And what a wonderful bit of work to start the show with.
That is UFO from their 1977 breakthrough album, title track, Lights Out.
Wishbone Ash
Now, a very important structure in my youth was the Sheffield City Hall.
I saw many, many bands there, UFO included, who we just heard.
This next band is another group that I saw, and I'm really glad I got the chance to see them, because they were absolutely magnificent.
This is Wishbone Ash.
And before that, Wishbone Ash.
Now, I never saw the original line-up of Wishbone Ash.
I saw the line-up that featured Laurie Wisefield, who just happened to be born on the exact same street as Phil Collen.
And what a great player he was as well.
But that is the original Wishbone Ash from the album Argus, when we heard the immortal Blowin' Free.
The Who
Another band that I saw at the Sheffield City Hall back in 1981, or was it 1982, I think.
It was the first time that I had ever seen The Who, and I couldn't believe they were playing somewhere as small as the Sheffield City Hall, because by then they were a stadium arena act.
But they came to our humble little building, 2,200 people, and I've just been a fan of this band ever since I first heard of them back in 1965, 1966, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper.
They really are one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
They are The Who. It's a standalone single called Join Together.
Luke Spiller
So to compare the female form with the earth that we walk on at best needs an explanation.
So here, with said explanation of why his muse reminds him of a West Coast state of America, is Luke Spiller.
And before that, absolutely brand new Luke Spiller from the album that's out in April.
The album is called Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine.
Nice snappy title there, Luke.
But hey, we lived since I was a kid with the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, so I think he's in good company.
But what a wonderful bit of work, the song is called She's Just Like California.
Stone Temple Pilots
Personally, I don't think that band ever got their due, because there was so much talk in the press that they were just like a poor man's Pearl Jam, and I think they were so much more than that.
It's the Stone Temple Pilots from their album No. 4 with a fantastic bit of work called Atlanta.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we're going to get stuck in some traffic.
Traffic
And before that, we heard Traffic, who gave us the wonderful talents of Jim Capaldi and, of course, Steve Winwood.
From the album John Barleycorn Must Die, we just heard Every Mother's Son.
All About Eve
Okay, so come on then, be honest, when did you last hear that?
Wow, what a great bit of work.
I remember these guys so well, because Def Leppard did a load of gigs with these guys in Europe on promo, because we were on the same label, so we were bumping into them all over the place.
And they were really good people, and I'm really glad they had a few big hits.
It's a shame they didn't make the big breakthrough, but at least they did have their moment, and they are All About Eve.
They're taken from the Winter Words Hits and Rarities album.
We just heard the hit Every Angel.
U2
Right then, with one of their Songs of Innocence, let's head over to Cedarwood Road.
This is U2.
And before that, we heard U2.
Remember the album that got dropped into your inbox overnight, and so many people complained about this spam that came in?
I'm like, hang on a minute.
This is a U2 album.
You just got it for free.
What are you complaining about?
It's a really good album.
The album is called Songs Of Innocence, and the song that we heard, and oddly enough, this street did have a name because it's the street that Bono was born on.
It is Cedarwood Road.
Rick Springfield
Now, if you have never heard the album that that song we just heard came from, I heartily suggest you give it a go.
It's much better than you'd give it credit for normally, because, and I say this with the greatest respect to the artist, he is somebody that a lot of folk think is just a soap opera actor in the USA that had a couple of hits in the 80s.
But he is so much better than that and so much more consistent.
His name is Rick Springfield.
The album is Automatic, the song that we just heard is Invisible World.
Really, check it out.
Show Outro
And that, my friends, is about it for this week.
Been a real pleasure, as always.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please, please, please don't go anywhere.
Why would you ever want to anyway?
So, until then, I shall leave you with this from that wonderful debut album that is Rattus Norvegicus.
This is The Stranglers from 1977 with Go Buddy Go.
Till next week, see ya!
