Show Intro

Evening all,

Welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

This week, coming to you all the way from Atlantic City in New Jersey.

But whatever Def Leppard, whatever I am up to this week, it all pales in significance to the very tragic news that we received just a few short days ago:

That we have lost one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock.

I am talking about Mr. Mick Ralphs, co-founder of both Mott the Hoople and Bad Company.

So, for the next 60 minutes or so, we are going to be celebrating the great man's music for both of those bands.

And let's start off with this one, shall we — the first song ever committed to tape and written by Mick Ralphs for Mott The Hoople.

Mott The Hoople

Yes, having had the news percolating for a couple of days now.

I've really tried my hardest to make this show a celebration.

It does get a bit tedious when The Joe Elliott Show becomes The Joe Elliott Obituary Show. In the last couple of weeks alone, it's been Sly Stone, Brian Wilson.

But I want this to be a celebration — this next hour or so — and Mick Ralphs was a lovely, lovely guy.

And that song that we just heard, "Rock and Roll Queen", once covered by my side band, The Down 'n' Outz.

Just to put a smile on everyone's face maybe:

When we opened for Paul Rodgers at the Albert Hall, Mick Ralphs was actually there — and had no idea that I was going to play that song.

And for me to see him stood at the side of the stage, dancing up and down like a little kid, was something that I will take to my grave.

Because it’s such a fantastic song, from their debut album back in 1969.

That is Mott the Hoople with "Rock and Roll Queen".

Bad Company

Now, here's a song that was written for Mott the Hoople and actually sung by Mick — but it was never released at the time, only seeing the light of day many, many years later on a box set.

But he did bring it to his new band, which he’d formed with Boz Burrell, Simon Kirke, and the great Paul Rodgers.

This is Bad Company's version of "Movin’ On".

And before that, we heard Bad Company from their debut album back in 1974, with their version of "Movin’ On".

Mott The Hoople

Mick on lead vocals there from Mott the Hoople’s third album, Wildlife, with a lovely little tune called "Whiskey Women".

Mott The Hoople

And movin’ on — or should I say, moving back — to the Mad Shadows album, featuring once again Mick on lead vocals.

This is Mott the Hoople.

And before that, we heard Mott the Hoople from 1970, their second album Mad Shadows.

The track we heard: "Thunderbuck Ram".

Bad Company

Written by Mick, but sung brilliantly by Mr. Paul Rodgers.

That is Bad Company from their third album, Run With The Pack, with the wonderful "Simple Man" — one of my favorite Bad Company songs of all time.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock.

This week it is a tribute to the late, great Mick Ralphs.

Coming up, we're gonna visit the Mott album.

Mott The Hoople

And before that, we heard Mott the Hoople.

It was a Mick Ralphs masterstroke on the 1973 album Mott.

The song is "I'm a Cadillac / El Camino Doloroso".

Bad Company

Another Mick Ralphs–penned tune that was originally recorded by Mott the Hoople, but this time it actually did see the light of day because it featured on the 1972 album "All the Young Dudes".

We just heard, however, the 1974 version from Bad Company's debut album.

The song is "Ready for Love".

Mott The Hoople

So now, back to 1972 — to an album that is often credited as being the prototype for punk rock.

That album is Brain Capers.

Here with a wonderful cover of an old Youngbloods tune, Mick on lead vocals — once again, Mott the Hoople.

And before that, we heard from the Brain Capers album a year later — the wonderful Youngbloods cover of "Darkness, Darkness".

Mott The Hoople

Superb sentiment there from Mr. Mick Ralphs — a very Neil Young-sounding Mick Ralphs, I might add — from the 1971 album Wildlife.

We just heard "Home is Where I Want to Be".

Show Outro

And now, my friends, all the way from Atlantic City in New Jersey — that’s about it for this week's tribute to the late, great Mick Ralphs.

I hope that you've enjoyed at least some of the music that you've heard tonight.

Let’s go out with a bit of a rocker, shall we?

Because I don’t want this to be a complete downer.

He was a very gentle soul, and could write some beautiful, beautiful soft songs — as we just heard — but check this out.

Let’s end on a bit of a stonker, shall we?

I'll be back with you next week at exactly the same time, all the way from Quebec in Canada.

Until then — back to the album Run With The Pack — this is Bad Company and "Sweet Lil' Sister".

Till next week — rest in peace and rock in peace, Mick Ralphs.
