Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
How you doing? Great to be with you once again.
Tonight's show is... how do I describe tonight's show?
It is full of wonderful, wonderful music — and it is themed.
There is a theme to tonight's show, which some of you will guess, and some of you...
Well, you'll be illuminated as the show progresses, and certainly towards the end of the show.
So how are we going to start off tonight? Let's go back to 1977.
This is Ian Hunter.
Ian Hunter
Myself and the great man have differing opinions on this particular album.
I think it’s absolutely stunning — he does not like it at all.
But I think it’s a wonderful record — and so much so, that two of the songs on this particular album were the first two songs I chose to record when I put The Down ’n’ Outz together with The Quireboys, back in 2009.
It is Ian Hunter from 1977.
The album is Overnight Angels.
The song that we heard: the opening track, Golden Opportunity.
Be-Bop Deluxe
Now, going back just a couple of years earlier to 1975, this is Be-Bop Deluxe.
And before that, Be-Bop Deluxe from that wonderful 1975 album Futurama, with the almost hit single Made in Heaven.
Journey
It’s still a very important part of their live set and sung brilliantly by young Arnel.
Actually, I’ve got to say — it's Journey, taken from the album Infinity.
The song: Wheel in the Sky.
The Cars
Right, then — we went from '77, to '75... let’s head to 1978.
This, from their debut album, is The Cars.
And before that, we heard The Cars from their debut album — absolutely wonderful stuff.
The song we heard: Moving in Stereo.
Queen
With a huge dollop of bravado and oozing humor — which is very, very important in rock and roll.
That is Queen, taken from the album Jazz.
The song: Fat Bottomed Girls.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up — we’re off to visit heaven and earth with Yes, another great band — to whom humour is not a stranger.
Yes
And before that, I wonder indeed if this was a one-way or a two-way ticket — the album is Heaven & Earth.
The band are Yes.
It was the first album to feature Taylor Hawkins’ friend, Jon Davison, on vocals — and sadly, the last album to feature Chris Squire on bass.
The song that we heard: the very epic Subway Walls.
The Darkness
That is The Darkness, who toured with Def Leppard on the X tour back in 2002, which is what... 23 years ago now? Good lord.
The album: the brilliantly titled One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back.
The song that we heard: Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time.
Foreigner
And while I have your attention, may I once again mention the project: Cash for Kids.
Myself and a few other like-minded folk from the rock world have designed T-shirts that are only available for a limited period of time at planetrock.com.
So, if you want to get one — put your hand in your pocket pretty quick, because they are going fast.
Cash for Kids — it's a really good cause.
Okay then — you ready to play some head games?
Good. This is Foreigner.
And before that, we heard Foreigner, from their third album in 1978 (I think it was).
The album is Head Games.
The song that we heard: Dirty White Boy.
Cheap Trick
Absolutely stunningly epic stuff there from Cheap Trick.
The album is One on One.
The song that we just heard: If You Want My Love.
Show Outro
Now, all the songs that you've heard tonight — I did mention at the top of the show, there's a theme running through it.
And the theme is: every single track that you have heard so far has been produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who sadly passed away a couple of weeks ago.
But it was only announced this week.
And listen to the body of work over the last hour — and that’s just a fraction of some of the work that he has done.
He worked all the way back to the late '60s with people like Free and David Bowie.
He worked with Hawkwind — I mean, the list just goes on.
Go on Wikipedia to see how many albums that man worked on — either as a producer or an engineer.
It is stunning.
And I really thought tonight would be a great way to celebrate his commitment and his contribution to music — because it has been epic.
Roy Thomas Baker — one of the great guys.
Best known probably for his work with Queen, but boy, did he do a lot of great work.
We have one more song left to play, so I will say thanks for listening.
I will be with you next week at the same time — so don’t go anywhere.
Until then, I will leave you with one of Roy’s lesser-known works — but it’s just a great bit of work.
A band put together from ex-members of John’s Children, Sparks, early members of Roxy Music, and future members of Ian Hunter’s Overnight Angels.
Not the Australian Jet, but the mid-'70s UK Jet.
The title track from their album: Nothing to Do with Us.
Rock in peace, Roy Thomas Baker.
And I’ll see you guys next week.
