Show Intro
Greetings my fellow music lovers and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
I hope you're all screwed down to the floor because it's pretty mental out there, isn't it?
What have we got for you tonight? 60 minutes of fantastic music, and what else could I start with?
Nothing other than this particular beauty from the Down 'n' Outz.
Down 'N' Outz
Yes, you could say that there's an ill wind blowing and it's bringing a storm, my goodness.
Have you ever seen anything like it? I actually haven't. I've seen some pretty bad stuff, but this one takes the biscuit.
And I hope everybody is safe and staying indoors with your favourite tipple and listening to some great music that I'm going to be playing here for the next 55 minutes or so now.
That is 15 years old. I cannot believe that that is 15 years old.
Then again, I can't believe that the original is 50 years old.
It originally was recorded by Mott in 1975 on their debut album Drive On, but that is the Down and Outs from our debut album in 2010, My ReGeneration.
The song is "Storm."
Ricky Warwick
Right, here's some brand new music from Ricky Warwick. This, lyrically, could be the absolute follow-up to Don McLean's American Pie.
And before that, absolutely brand spanking new Ricky Warwick from his new album out this month, and the song is the logical follow-up to American Pie, which was written all about the death of Buddy Holly.
This is all about the Crickets, his former backing band who he'd parted company with about three weeks previously, who stayed in a town called Clovis.
Buddy Holly went on tour, took a plane with the Big Bopper and Richie Valens, which sadly crashed into a field just somewhere in Iowa, and that was the end of Buddy Holly.
But The Crickets Stayed In Clovis, so they were okay for a while.
It's a brilliant bit of work, I love the song and can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
Ian Hunter
Okay, so hands up if you were at the Doncaster Gaumont in June of 1977.
Yep, me too, and what a phenomenal gig it was.
Ian Hunter named the band and the album Overnight Angels, but we all know it was essentially his third solo album from 1977, the song that we just heard, "Justice Of The Peace."
Nickel Creek
So until then, let's check this out. Wonderful stuff from Nickel Creek.
And before that we heard Nickel Creek, a fantastic tune from an album called Why Should the Fire Die?. The song is "When In Rome."
Mott The Hoople
Yeah, a bit of a Mott Fest tonight. We opened up with a Mott song, albeit the Down 'n' Outz version.
We heard Ian Hunter, just a couple of songs ago, and now we just heard the actual band themselves, Mott The Hoople.
From their 1971 album Wildlife, which the band mockingly used to call Mild Life because it is very much like the song that we just heard, which is a beautiful bit of work, sung by Mick Ralphs.
The song is "Wrong Side Of The River".
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up… Here we go again.
Whitesnake
And before that, of course, who doesn't know it is from the 1987 album, the 30th anniversary Super Deluxe version.
It's Whitesnake with "Still Of The Night." Rock in peace, John Sykes.
Blue Murder
Yes, I dare say, like a lot of listeners, I was absolutely shocked and stunned to read just a couple of days ago, at 65 years young, that John Sykes had passed away. Unbelievable.
I hadn't heard from him for a very, very long time, and there was an association with Def Leppard back in 1991, where he actually came over to Dublin for a couple of days to work on the Adrenalize album with us.
It was just to test the waters to see if he might be a good replacement or an addition to the band, and we don't like to use the phrase "replacement" for Steve.
You can't replace Steve; you just joined Def Leppard after Steve passed away.
It didn't work out and of course, Vivian Campbell, also suffering with cancer, has been in the band for 33 years now, so that definitely did work out.
But there's no doubt in his talent. He was an absolutely incredible singer, never mind a phenomenal guitar player, which is why I thought I'd feature him twice there.
We just heard Blue Murder from their debut album in 1989 of the same name, a wonderful bit of work called Valley Of The Kings.
Generation X
Right, well, we just visited the Valley of the Kings. Let's go off and visit the Valley of the Dolls. This is Generation X.
And before that, we heard Generation X wearing their "Rebel Rebel" on their sleeve big time, but who cares? Wonderful stuff.
We heard the title track of their album Valley Of The Dolls.
Hole
I absolutely love it, you could even call it Pop Grunge.
It is of course Hole, featuring Courtney Love, or if you like, Mrs. Kurt Cobain.
"Celebrity Skin" is the song, and what a great song it is.
Show Outro
And that, my friends, is about it for this week.
It's been a real pleasure, as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
So until then, I shall leave you with this.
A little bit of "Ooh La La" from the Faces.
This is "Borstal Boys."
Till next week. See ya.
