The Joe Elliott Show - 24th May 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

How are you?

I am back from my gallivanting around — I would say the world, but actually, just the US for a little bit.

We went to Puerto Rico for about a week, where we did some recording and some rehearsals, and a brilliant gig on the Thursday night in a great arena there.

And then, off to Ocean City, Maryland, for a fantastic beach festival featuring the likes of Shinedown, Bush, and Rob Zombie.

My current favorite, The Struts, were on as well.

It was great to hang out with those guys.

But I'm back, feet on terra firma, ready to give you 60 minutes of really brilliant music.

I hope you like some of it.

This is The Clash.

The Clash

I saw them live at the Sheffield Top Rank when they were promoting their debut album back in 1977, and I have to say they were absolutely inspiring.

Wonderful stuff.

It is The Clash there, from their debut album, with "Clash City Rockers."

Sensational Alex Harvey Band

Well, that never gets old, does it?

What a fantastic bit of work there from the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

The year: 1973.

The album: Next.

The song we heard: a phenomenal bit of work called "The Faith Healer."

Jobriath

Now here, with a tale of impending doom, is Jobriath.

And before that, we heard an artist called Jobriath.

Never really took off anywhere, but he was staring at me from the second-hand rack in Violet Maze Record Store back in the mid-70s, and I absolutely fell in love with his music.

From his debut album, we just heard "World Without End."

Horslips

For these next couple of tunes, we're gonna go deep into "ideally I die" territory.

Starting off with Horslips.

And before that, a band that I do know well, because I saw them live twice in Sheffield back in the mid-70s and got to know them when I moved to Dublin, Ireland, which is where they were based — it is Horslips, from the album The Book of Invasions, with "Trouble (With a Capital T)."

East Of Eden

Now, I can't profess to know too much about the band that we just heard, but I do know that they were a prog rock band that had this strange hit single which we just heard.

So a lot of people thought that’s what they were gonna sound like on every song they did — but apparently, it's nothing like their normal stuff.

They were a full-on proper prog rock band that did this for a bit of fun, I suppose, and ended up having a number one hit single with it.

It is a band called East of Eden.

The song was number one in 1970.

It is "Jig-a-Jig."

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up — a medically induced nap with Guns N’ Roses.

Guns N' Roses

And before that, an absolutely amazing piece of work from Use Your Illusion I.

It is Guns N’ Roses, with "Coma."

The Cult

Back in the '90s, when Vivian Campbell joined Def Leppard, myself and Viv used to play soccer with Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, and it was hilarious to watch the two of them going at each other on the football pitch — apparently as well as on stage!

But what a great sound they made.

They really are an overlooked band, I think.

It is The Cult, from a wonderful album called Electric.

The song we heard: "Lil’ Devil."

The Rolling Stones

Well, it could be argued that Guns N’ Roses took over the mantle of “the most dangerous band in the world” in the late '80s and early '90s.

But if that’s true, then they took over from this bunch of geezers.

This is The Rolling Stones.

And before that, what I’d seriously consider to be Mick Jagger’s best-ever vocal performance:

It is The Rolling Stones, from the album Beggars Banquet, with "Street Fighting Man."

Roxy Music

Two very different bands there — linked together by one very beautiful lady in Jerry Hall, who was the lover of both Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry and The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger.

Lucky for all parties — not at the same time!

I would just say there: Roxy Music, from their wonderful album Country Life, with "All I Want Is You."

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.

As I always say — it has been a real pleasure.

And I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.

So please don’t go anywhere.

Until then, I shall leave you with this — from an album called We’re All Alright.

This is Cheap Trick, with a song with a perfect title for all of us:

"Radio Lover."

Until next week — see ya.
