Show Intro

Greetings, my fellow music lovers, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on, yes, you know where, the wonderful Planet Rock.

Always a pleasure to be with you.

What have we got for you tonight?

Well, let's think.

Actually, let's not think.

Let's just listen and enjoy.

This is Roxy Music.

Roxy Music

In my humble opinion, a fantastic way to get the show started, from their fourth album, Country Life, back in 1974, that is Roxy Music with "The Thrill Of It All."

The Jam

Right, let's get the Reaper bit out of the way this week, shall we?

Because there's a couple of significant ones.

And before that, we heard The Jam, taken from their collection The Best Of.

It's the only thing I got to hand at the moment, because it really took me by surprise that Rick Butler passed away at the young old age, if you like, there's a great oxymoron for you, of 69.

Unbelievable, really.

I saw those guys live at the Sheffield City Hall, I still have the little badge that they handed out on the wall of my studio, amongst thousands of others.

But I really loved their first album, which sadly, like I said, I didn't have, so I pretty much wanted to play something from that first album, because I was there when they broke, and I'm really sad to see that the drummer has passed away.

Rick Butler, rest in peace.

So, we just heard The Jam there with, of course, I think it was their first ever hit In The City.

AC/DC

Yeah, just a couple of days ago, it was the 35th anniversary of the passing of the late great Bon Scott, and a night I will never forget, because Def Leppard were playing the Top Rank in Sheffield that particular night.

We were managed by the same company, and of course, we got to hear the news pretty early.

And it was a bit of a downer, I've got to say.

We had to go on stage and do what we do, big smiles, all the posing, and all that nonsense.

But at the same time, your heart is bleeding, because you've just toured with these guys maybe three months, four months earlier, and hung out with Bon Scott.

And he was such a fantastic guy, and his legacy at least remains on record, because all those early AC/DC records, he is the star of the show.

And there, from their first album that they did with Mutt Lange as a producer, the only one that bonded, Highway to Hell, we just heard AC/DC there with "Touch Too Much."

Note - Pre-empting Joe's probable correction next week, it was of course the 45th anniversary. He died in 1980 after the 'Highway To Hell' support tour in November 1979.

Black Eyed Sons

Right, moving on from the tragedy of death to the awakening of a new artist, born out of the ashes of the Quireboys, this is absolutely brand spanking new, Black Eyed Sons.

And before that, we heard the Black Eyed Sons' brand new album, we just heard the title track, and yes, that was me duetting with Griff on that particular song.

I mean, we are members of the Down 'n' Outz, so when they come knocking and say, "Would you like to sing on our new album?" who am I to say no?

Of course I was going to do it.

And by the way, Griff made the video himself, and it's an absolute astonishing piece of work, so check out the video, he did a really great job.

The song we heard, it is the title track of their brand new album, Cowboys In Pinstriped Suits.

Cheap Trick

Listeners of a certain age will of course go back all the way to things like Dream Police for that particular band as an outstanding album, but I have to say, if you haven't ever checked out The Latest, which isn't, because it came out in 2008, I think, it's probably one of the greatest albums that they ever made, absolutely at the top of their game when they made this album, the song that we just heard, "Closer The ballad Of Bert And Linda.

What a great band Cheap Trick are.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up, we're off to visit Paradise with Meat Loaf.

Meat Loaf

And of course, Ellen Foley is the girl that featured on Bat Out of Hell with Meat Loaf, which we just heard a track from.

The song is Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

Ellen Foley

You know, for years, me and my mates used to say, "God, that intro on that song by Mick Ronson is just awesome," and I remember saying it to Ian Hunter once, and he said, "No, that was me, actually."

They couldn't get it right in the studio, went out for dinner, had a few drinks, came back and Ian said, "Give me that guitar."

And so the intro of that song is actually Ian Hunter.

Who knew?

Not I.

But it's a wonderful bit of work, and it's Ellen Foley, the album produced by Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson from 1979, the album is Night Out.

Foo Fighters

Right then, some Medicine At Midnight.

This is Foo Fighters.

And before that, the last album to feature the wonderful talents of Mr. Taylor Hawkins.

It is the Foo Fighters, the album Medicine At Midnight, the song "Waiting On A War."

The Polyphonic Spree

Wow, I haven't played those guys for a long time.

That is the Polyphonic Spree fronted by Tim DeLorta, who was the lead singer in a band called Tripping Daisy, who opened for Def Leppard in America on the Slang tour back in 1996.

The album that we just heard the track from is Fragile Army.

The song is "Section 22 (Running Away)."

Show Outro

And that, my friends, is about it for this week.

Been a real pleasure, as always.

I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so don't go anywhere, okay?

Until then, I shall leave you with this from the album Indiscreet.

It is Sparks and "In The Future."

Till next week, see ya!
