Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on, yes, you know where, the mighty Planet Rock.
I love doing this show I really really do.
Can you believe it’s already February. It’s just mental how quickly January went, but we’ve only got 60 short minutes, and I really want to get on with the show because there’s some great music tonight.
Starting off with the Heavy Metal Kids.
Heavy Metal Kids
Like most of the artists that I play on my show, I’ve seen them live at some stage in my life, and that band that we just heard is no exception.
It’s the Heavy Metal Kids. I saw them promoting the Kitsch album in 1976 at the Sheffield Top Rank, and I was very fortunate to get up on stage with them in 2008 at a little pub in London and do their almost hit single She’s No Angel, which is from the same album.
The album is Kitsch, and the Heavy Metal Kids song that we just heard is a wonderful bit of work called From Heaven To Hell And Back Again.
Lone Star
Another band that I saw twice from the same time period was this crowd, and they were absolutely amazing.
This is Lone Star.
And before that, we heard Lone Star, who I said in the intro I saw twice — once with Kenny Driscoll on vocals and once with the amazing John Sloman on vocals.
But they’re from their second album, featuring John Sloman firing On All Six is the album. The song that we heard is The Ballad Of Crafty Jack.
Jethro Tull
I remember the first time I ever heard that song. I was on a holiday in a caravan in Wales with my parents, and it came on the radio, and I’ve absolutely loved it ever since.
I’m not actually sure that Ian Anderson has the same affection for the song, maybe because it was their first hit, maybe because he just got fed up of hearing it.
I never get fed up of hearing it. It’s an absolutely wonderful bit of work. It’s from the album Stand Up. The song is Living In The Past. Of course, it is Jethro Tull.
Mott
Now, any eager-eared listeners to my show last week that are fans of the band Mott will have noticed a couple of faux pas that I made when I introduced the song Storm.
First of all, I said that the original version was from their debut album Drive On and that the version I was about to play was from the debut album of the Down 'n' Outz, My ReGeneration.
Well, slap my wrist because I got both of them — me of all people — got both of those things wrong.
The version I played was the live version from The Further Live Adventures of the Down 'n' Outz, and it wasn’t from Drive On. It was from their second album Shouting And Pointing.
But it’s a great song.
But to make up for the fact that I got it all wrong, I am going to play something from Mott’s debut album, and this is it.
And before that, 100% accurate, I promise you, Mott from their debut album in 1975. The album is Drive On. The song that we heard is Here We Are.
Paul McCartney
From the very underrated Red Rose Speedway album, that is Paul McCartney and Wings from 1973 with a wonderful bit of work called Little Lamb Dragonfly.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show, right here on the magnificent Planet Rock.
Coming up, we’re off to visit the Psycho Circus with KISS.
KISS
And before that, we heard KISS from a song that could well have sat on any of their classic albums like Destroyer or Love Gun. But it is the title track of their album Psycho Circus.
Bryan Ferry
Cover versions of songs is a very subjective argument that I’m sure is held in every pub, every night, up and down the land.
If you heard the original first and then you hear a cover, chances are you’re going to say, "Nah, I prefer the original."
If you hear the cover first and then you hear the original, you may say, "Actually, I prefer this version to the original." It’s often the one you hear first.
And I have to say, the song that we just heard, I’ve heard many versions of, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad one. I love the Cheep Trick version. I love the original by a gentleman called Dobie Gray, but I really, really dig the version that we just heard from Bryan Ferry.
It’s from the album Another Time, Another Place. The song is The 'In' Crowd.
Don Henley
Right, over to a gentleman who set out to build the perfect beast, and I think he succeeded. This is Don Henley.
Before that, we heard Don Henley, taking a break from the band The Eagles, as the rest of the guys did as well, when he put out an album called Building The Perfect Beast, and what a great album it is.
The song that we heard from that album is Sunset Grill.
Marianne Faithfull
As my friend Andy said to me just a couple of days ago, January isn’t over yet, and he was absolutely right. It is now, of course, but just a few days ago, we lost yet another artist in January when Marianne Faithfull, at the age of 78, passed away.
I had the great pleasure of being in her company on a flight from Dublin to London when I was flying in for the Mick Ronson Memorial Show back in 1994, and I have to say she was fantastic company.
We’re talking about a lady whose fingerprint goes all the way back to the 60s with The Rolling Stones and all the way into this century with Metallica.
She was a very varied artist, a very brave artist, and I thought I have to play something this week because it’s just the right thing to do.
From a best-of album, it is a song that was a huge hit for her back in 1964. In fact, it was a hit for Marianne before it was a hit for The Rolling Stones, who wrote this song. It is As Tears Go By.
So rest in peace, Marianne Faithfull.
Show Outro
And then, my dear friends, is about it for this week. It’s been a real pleasure as always, and I know I say it every week, but I mean it every week.
So, until next week, I shall leave you with this. They’ve got a new album out real soon, and I have no doubt I will be playing things from that album in the future. But until then, let’s play something from their album Indiscreet.
This is Sparks with In The Future.
Until next week, see ya.
