The Joe Elliott Show - 19th July 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Greetings, my fellow music lovers.

And welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

This week it is coming to you all the way from a little town in upstate New York called Monticello, on what I would consider to be a well-deserved day off.

We just spent the last 10–12 days or so in Canada, which went spiffingly well, and so I thought I would start the show off with a great Canadian band.

And for a change, it's not Rush — this is Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Taken from their Greatest Hits album, that is Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Or to give them their less formal name, BTO — with a wonderful bit of work called "Roll On Down the Highway."

ELO

Now on last week's show, we said our goodbyes to Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, but coincidentally on the very same day, in the very same city, in an arena just down the road.

Jeff Lynne's ELO were doing exactly the same thing — on what would turn out to be their second-to-last ever show.

Because after the Birmingham weekend, they had to cancel Manchester and the Hyde Park shows through injury and illness to Jeff.

What a really sad way to go out.

So let's remember them the way that they came in.

This is the Electric Light Orchestra.

And before that, we heard the Electric Light Orchestra, from the album of the same name.

And can I just say to Jeff Lynne and to everybody that's ever been in ELO, thanks for the music over the last 50 years or so.

What happens next? Only Jeff Lynne knows.

What did we hear, though?

The first song that I ever heard from the band back in 1972,and covered by Def Leppard in 2006 on the Yeah! album — "10538 Overture."

Hanoi Rocks

From the Bob Ezrin-produced Two Steps from the Move album.

The last one to feature Razzle on drums, sadly, we heard Hanoi Rocks there with "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

Strawbs

Now, more sad news rolled in over the last couple of days, because the Grim Reaper has been back round again and taken Dave Cousins from Strawbs.

So, as a tribute to Dave, here's a couple of tunes that you may be familiar with.

But you might be surprised by the second one.

Before that, what we heard was what he's best known for his band Strawbs, and their biggest ever hit, "Lay Down."

Godspeed, Dave Cousins.

Def Leppard

Now, I'm guessing some hardcore Def Leppard fans would already know that the spoken word intro on that song is indeed Dave Cousins.

Who came to visit the producer of the album On Through the Night, as he had previously worked with the Strawbs.

And while he was there, we politely asked him if he would do it, because it wasn't quite working with my pretty broad Yorkshire accent.

And this very well-spoken gentleman was Dave Cousins, and God bless him — he went out there and did it in one or two takes.

So thanks for that eternally, Dave Cousins.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock.

This week coming to you from the little town of Monticello in upstate New York.

Coming up, we're going to be selling England by the pound.

Genesis

And before that, we heard Genesis from the album Selling England by the Pound, with "Firth of Fifth."

Jethro Tull

Well, as soon as there's been a bit of a heatwave, I thought I'd play something that sounds like we were all on the beach.

But it just reminded me of the fact that when Def Leppard played Blackpool in 2023, in early July, it was absolutely freezing.

So I hope we're all not taking this nice weather for granted.

That is Jethro Tull, taken from the collection Living in the Past, with "Up the 'Pool."

The Faces

Right then, time for a little bit of Ooh La La with The Faces.

And before that, we heard The Faces from the album Ooh La La with "Postcard Boys."

The Rolling Stones

Yeah, just a few short years ago, we'd never have thought we'd have heard a Rolling Stones song with Paul McCartney playing bass — but we just did.

From their last album Hackney Diamonds, that is The Rolling Stones with "Bite My Head Off,"

Show Outro

And that, my friends, is about it for this week, all the way from Monticello, in upstate New York.

Been a real pleasure, as always.

As you can probably hear, I have a bit of road throat, so it's about time I put this thing to bed and took a bit of a rest.

I'll see you next week from God knows where, because we'll be on a two-week break.

So until then, I shall leave you with this — from the album of the same name.

This is Generation X with "Your Generation."

Till next week, see ya!
