The Joe Elliott Show - 19th April 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Good evening, my fellow music lovers, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show.

Right here on the fantastic Planet Rock.

Always a pleasure.

I've got 60 minutes — one little hour — to play you some, in my humble opinion, magic music.

And making magic to start the show off tonight, here's some Pat Travers.

Pat Travers

Amazing to think that I saw that guy for the first time opening for the Sensational Alex Harvey Band back in 1976.

And just a few short years later, Def Leppard would be opening for him on our first-ever US tour, up and down the West Coast of the States.

Absolutely amazing experience.

And there he was, from his second album in 1977.

The album is Making Magic.

He is Pat Travers.

The song we heard — which Def Leppard used to cover, believe it or not — is Rock And Roll Susie.

The Who

Right then, here's The Who.

And before that, we heard The Mighty Who, from that wonderful album that is Quadrophenia, with The Punk and the Godfather.

Uriah Heep

Now that's another band that Def Leppard toured with in the States.

But oddly, this is Uriah Heep opening for Def Leppard in 1983.

It was the strangest experience because, as kids, we used to go and see them live.

Most of us at the Sheffield City Hall.

For Phil, it would have been the Lyceum or somewhere like that — maybe Hammersmith.

But there they were, opening for us.

They were so cool about it — such wonderful people.

I'm still in touch with Mick Box.

They're a great band.

And there they are from the 1972 album The Magician's Birthday.

It’s Uriah Heep with Sweet Lorraine.

Iggy Pop

And talking about The Punk and the Godfather, here's The Godfather of Punk.

This is Iggy Pop.

And before that, we heard Iggy Pop — title track of that wonderful album Lust for Life.

Utopia

I saw that band live, opening for Led Zeppelin at Knebworth, on the 4th of August, 1979.

Now, why do I remember that date so well?

Because it was the day before we signed our record deal with PolyGram Records.

And they were wonderful, but disappointingly played absolutely nothing from the album that the song we just heard came from.

That album is 1977’s Ra.

The band are Utopia.

The song we heard: Jealousy.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up, brand new music from Elton John and Brandi Carlile.

Elton John/Brandi Carlile

And before that, Elton John and Brandi Carlile — brand new music produced by Andrew Watt, of Rolling Stones and Ozzy Osbourne fame.

The album is called Who Believes In Angels.

The song that we heard: The Rose Of Laura Nyro.

Robert Plant

I'm a huge fan of Robert Plant's solo career.

I think he's done an amazing job expanding his horizons since the demise of Led Zeppelin, and there's no greater example than what we just heard there, from the — I think it was 1988 — album Manic Nirvana.

It’s Robert Plant with Tie Dye On The Highway.

Patti Smith

Okay, with one of the greatest covers of a Bruce Springsteen song ever recorded — this is Patti Smith.

And before that, as I said in the intro, it’s one of the greatest covers of a Bruce Springsteen song ever committed to tape.

It is Patti Smith, from the album Easter, with Because The Night.

Groundhogs

That, my friends, is taken from a long-forgotten compilation tape, and I do believe it was cassette-only.

Came out about 1979 on PolyGram Records, and it was given to me when we signed our record deal.

They let us rifle through their drawers and take a few samples.

The collection is called Solid Gold.

The band are The Groundhogs, and the song that we heard is a wonderful bit of work called Sins Of The Father.

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.

It’s been a real pleasure, as always.

I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don't go anywhere.

Do not touch that dial.

So, until then, I shall leave you with this.

And it's no coincidence that I played the Patti Smith song — because it’s from an album called Easter.

So, Happy Easter to everybody out there.

And I shall leave you with this:

The anthology version — in other words, the standalone single version — which features Lynsey de Paul in the spoken word middle eight.

This is Mott the Hoople with the very appropriate Roll Away The Stone.

Until next week, see ya!
