Show Intro
Good evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show.
We're right here on the wonderful Planet Rock, this week coming to you all the way from a place called Regina, in Saskatchewan, in Canada, where we are holed up for the day.
Now, this last week has seen us play some stadiums and some festivals with some fantastic artists — who I will feature later on in the show.
But right now, we're going to start off with the only place we can: Birmingham.
This is Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath
Now, I can't profess to say that I saw every single second of last week's gig — because I didn't — being out on the road, and the time zones and all that kind of stuff.
But the bits that I have seen, I have to say: quite astonishing.
And no better example than what we just heard there, or last week's version of that song.
The drum-off between Danny Carey from Tool, Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Travis Barker from Blink-182, featuring of course also Tom Morello, once of Rage Against the Machine, and more recently — Just Like '73 by Def Leppard — Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme, who we played with this week as well.
And Rudy Sarzo — let's not forget — being in many bands, but back in 1981 was in Blizzard of Ozz, when Def Leppard opened for Ozzy all over the U.S. that summer.
What a list, and what an incredible thing to see.
But we just heard the original version there, taken from the album Sabotage.
It is, of course, Black Sabbath with Symptom of the Universe.
Foreigner
We will be revisiting Villa Park later on in the show, but for right now, let's go with a couple of bands that just shared the stage with Def Leppard this very week — starting off with Foreigner.
And before that, we heard Foreigner, who shared the same stage on one of those gigs.
We heard them from The Very Best... and Beyond album, with what at the time was a brand-new song — never featured on any of their albums before.
The song is Soul Doctor.
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
We actually did two shows with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts this week, and we've done many shows with them in the past — over the last 20–25 years.
We've toured together quite often.
She puts on a fantastic show, she's got a great band, she's a wonderful person, and she gets the crowd going — and that's what we like.
And there, we just heard her from the album Fit to Be Tied, with I Hate Myself for Loving You.
Extreme
Now, our run of shows through Canada started last weekend in Quebec.
Here's a couple more bands that we played with.
I mentioned Nuno earlier on, so let's see what he does.
This is Extreme.
And before that, we heard Extreme, another band that were on the same show in Quebec.
Fantastic bunch of guys — I really hope we can get to work together again one day.
Taken from the album Pornograffitti, we heard Get the Funk Out.
April Wine
Now, I saw those guys back at the Sheffield City Hall way back in 1982, and last week they were on the same festival as us in Quebec.
They are April Wine — taken from the album Harder... Faster — that is I Like to Rock.
Great use of the Beatles and the Stones over the end of that song.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock, this week coming to you all the way from Regina in Saskatchewan.
Coming up, we're going to revisit the spirit of Villa Park.
Ozzy Osbourne
And before that, we heard good old Ozzy Osbourne.
And the album title is No More Tears — but I think there’ll be plenty more, because there were plenty last weekend.
It was inspiring to see how much love there was thrown towards that man last week — and of course the other three guys from that amazing band Black Sabbath.
But we just heard Ozzy there, from the album No More Tears, with the song that he did on the night — Mama, I’m Coming Home.
Aerosmith
Well, for a guy who was supposedly retired because he was having voice issues, I thought Steven Tyler sounded absolutely fantastic last weekend — and he looked great as well.
For a 77-year-old guy, he looks half his age — and acted half his age — and that’s what Steven does, and that’s what we like about Steven.
So, watch this space for an Aerosmith reunion maybe — because if he can sing like that for an hour and a half or two hours, I think we may see him on stage again.
Let's hope so.
Taken there from the album Get a Grip, that is Aerosmith with Livin' on the Edge.
Blue Öyster Cult
Okay — so stepping away from Villa Park, and indeed bands that we have played with this week — here’s just a couple of really cool tunes.
Starting off with this one, with a spoken-word intro from Miss Patti Smith.
Here is Blue Öyster Cult.
And before that, we heard Blue Öyster Cult, from a great album called Agents of Fortune.
We heard The Revenge of Vera Gemini.
Deep Purple
Now I find this very interesting, because that is the 2024 remix of that song by Dweezil Zappa — interesting because his father Frank gets name-checked on one of the songs on that album.
Of course, there’s your big clue — that song is Smoke on the Water.
So what we just heard there is Deep Purple from the 2024 remix of the Machine Head album — the song we heard: Never Before.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends — all the way from Regina in Saskatchewan — is about it for this week.
Been a real pleasure, as always.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time — from upstate New York, where I shall be enjoying a day off.
So until then, I’ll leave you with this:
Now, as I said earlier on in the show, I didn’t see everything of last week’s Villa Park gig — but what I did see was a fantastic Steven Tyler, a fantastic Yungblud, and a fantastic Metallica, who did a brilliant version of the song that I’m about to play.
So that just leaves me to say:
Thank you to Tony Iommi, to Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler — everybody that participated in the show.
The love from those participants and the crowd is pretty obvious.
And 55 years of service to rock and roll — it’s just going to be with us for the rest of our lives.
So, hurrah for that.
This is Black Sabbath to end the show — once again from the album Sabotage.
A version played by Metallica last week was just awesome.
This is Hole in the Sky.
Till next week — see ya!
