The Joe Elliott Show - 12th April 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

How are you?

Always a pleasure — great to be with you once again.

Got one hour, 60 tiny little minutes.

So let's head off to Never Neverland.

This is The Pink Fairies.

Pink Fairies

What a glorious racket those guys made.

I remember seeing them live in the bandstand at Western Park in Sheffield when I was about 10 or 11 years old.

They had a reputation for playing free gigs, and even as a kid I often wondered how they made a living.

Little did I know that about six or seven years later, I would see them live at the Sheffield Top Rank with two drummers — one of them called Twink, who was a gentleman I hung out with in L.A. about 30 years ago for a little while — and Larry Wallis was the guitar player, who was the original guitarist in Motörhead.

And they are The Pink Fairies, taken there from the album Never Neverland, with a great bit of noise called The Snake.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Right, from Never Neverland, let's head off to Cosmo’s Factory.

This is Creedence Clearwater Revival.

And before that, we heard Creedence Clearwater Revival with a song once covered by Hanoi Rocks, taken from the album Cosmo’s Factory.

It is Up Around the Bend.

Mott The Hoople

Featuring lead vocals from Mick Ralphs — who later this year will hopefully be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Bad Company.

But there he was in his pomp with Mott the Hoople, from their third album in 1971.

Album's called Wild Life, the song: Whiskey Women.

Mountain

Now, I just mentioned Mick Ralphs — here's a band featuring one of his favourite ever guitar players.

This is Mountain.

And before that, we heard Mountain, featuring the wonderfully talented Leslie West on guitar — one of Mick Ralphs’ favorite ever guitarists, as he would no doubt tell you often, if you were in his company.

It’s a song that people of a certain age may remember was a theme tune to a British TV political show called Weekend World.

It is a wonderful bit of work called Nantucket Sleighride.

Blondie

Now, I was contemplating playing Hanging On The Telephone, a song once covered by Def Leppard, as it happens.

But I thought that this song showed off his talents just as much, if not more — he being Clem Burke, who was tragically dragged off by the Grim Reaper to the great gig in the sky just a few days ago, at the tragic age of only 70.

Wow.

Yeah, taken from the album Parallel Lines, a wonderful bit of work by Blondie there, called Fade Away And Radiate.

So rock in peace, Clem Burke.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up — a little bit of tenderness from Duff McKagan.

Duff McKagan

And before that — fantastic stuff.

The album's what, five, maybe six years old now?

But I remember thinking: this album — I think it was my album of the year at the time.

It’s Duff McKagan.

The album is Tenderness, and the song that we heard — a great bit of work — called Don’t Look Behind You.

Mike Campbell And The Dirty Knobs

Did you spot the guest vocalist on that particular tune?

Eagle-eared listeners will have noticed it is Ian Hunter.

What we just heard though is Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs — great name for a band — from an album called External Combustion.

Now, Mike Campbell played on Defiance parts one and two for Ian, so I’m guessing he said:

"Yeah, sure, I’ll be on your album, will you sing on mine?"

And so, you know — no money is exchanged, but goodwill is.

And that’s how it should be.

A wonderful bit of work called Dirty Job.

Yes

Now talking of Duff — and I almost forgot to mention this — it’s time for you good people to stick your hands in your pockets for a very worthy cause.

Because Duff, myself, and a few other good people have done some T-shirt designs specifically for the Cash for Kids charity.

Now they’re available for a limited time only at planetrock.com, so if you want one, it’s best to get your order in pretty quickly.

Right then, it’s time to fire up the Big Generator.

This is Yes.

And before that, we heard Yes, from that beautiful album that is called Big Generator.

We heard Love Will Find A Way.

James Gang

Now, when I was a young kid, I used to go to my local record store and ask them for all the displays that they were about to throw out — and they normally obliged.

So my bedroom wall was absolutely plastered in all sorts of different stuff, and one of the bands was the guys that we just heard now.

I had the poster on my wall at least a year and a half — two years — before I ever heard the album.

But when I did finally invest in the record, I was so happy that I had, because it introduced me to the weird and wacky world that is Joe Walsh.

And there he is, in his original band — The James Gang.

The album is called Thirds, the song — he still plays it live to this day with The Eagles — a wonderful bit of work called Walk Away.

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.

Been a real pleasure, as always.

But hey, you know that I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time — so don’t go anywhere.

Until then, I shall leave you with this, from the album Wizzard Brew — that’s your clue — featuring the ridiculously talented Mr. Roy Wood.

This is Wizzard, with See My Baby Jive.

Until next week — see ya.
