Show Intro
Greetings everyone and welcome once again to a very chilly Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Great to be with you as always. I've got about one hour to play you some, in my humble opinion, great music tonight and we're going to start off with a stonker.
This is Motörhead.
Motorhead
I was very fortunate to catch that band live a few times, in fact going back as far as the line-up that featured Larry Wallace on guitar once of the Pink Fairies.
It is, of course, though, Motörhead. It's the title track of the album Ace of Spades.
David Bowie
Well, it's going to be hard to keep up the pace of that particular song, but David Bowie is going to give it a try.
And before that, we heard David Bowie from what was, I suppose you might say, his comeback album.
He'd been away for about 10 years when he released the album The Next Day, the song that we just heard from that album, "If You Can See Me."
Budgie
Brilliant stuff there from the Welsh wonders Budgie from the album Bandelier.
We just heard "I Can't See My Feelings".
Television
Okay, so Art Rock, New Wave, Punk, who cares? This is Television.
And before that we heard Television, who broke pretty big in 1978, I think it was, with the Marquee Moon album.
But this is 1992 Television, and it is just a spectacular album. The album is simply called Television, the song we heard "Call Mr. Lee."
Mott
When I put The Down 'n' Outx together back in 2009, one of the first songs I chose to record was the one that we just heard because it meant so much to me.
Since I first heard it way back in 1976, the song is Broadside Outcasts, a fantastic spoonerism there from Pete Overend Watts.
The album is Shouting And Pointing, the band Mott.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band
And before that, we heard the Sensational Alex Harvey Band from 1974, the album The Impossible Dream, the song, it's the most wonderful bit of work called "Anthem."
Rush
So very, very different to anything they'd ever done in their past, which is possibly what caught my ear back in 1977 when I first heard it.
That is Rush from the album Farewell To Kings with a wonderful bit of work called "Madrigal."
Thin Lizzy
Well, we just visited Scotland and then we flew all the way over to Canada, so let's head back this way to the Emerald Isle, where I am currently freezing my you-know-what's-off.
This is Thin Lizzy.
And before that, we heard Thin Lizzy.
Taken from the Vagabonds Of The Western World album, it is the single A-side edit version of "The Rocker."
T. Rex
They were my first ever gig on the 23rd of October 1971. They are T. Rex, and from the expanded edition of an album of the same name, actually, we just heard "Seagull Woman,".
New York Dolls
Too much too soon? Well, sadly it was, but my goodness, it may have been small, but they left a brilliant body of work behind.
This is the New York Dolls.
And before that, chalk and cheese, but wonderful stuff, the New York Dolls from their second album in 1974, Too Much Too Soon, the song we heard, "Stranded In The Jungle."
Jeff Beck
When myself and Phil Collen were invited to the Classic Rock Awards in 2016 in Tokyo, Japan, my heart swelled with pride when I watched my boy Phil playing with one of his all-time heroes, Jeff Beck, who we just heard there from the Truth album with a wonderful bit of work written by his mate Jimmy Page.
The song is "Beck's Bolero."
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.
Now you may or may not have noticed that there's been a bit of a theme for tonight's show.
Now, I'm not much of a fan of January. It could be the fallout after Christmas. It could be many things, but let's just think about the last hour or so with the music that we've been listening to.
We just heard Jeff Beck. We just heard the New York Dolls, who featured both Jerry Nolan and Sylvain Sylvain. T. Rex, who featured Mickey Finn. Thin Lizzy, of course, it was Phil Lynott. Rush, their incredible drummer, Neil Peart.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, their incredible drummer, Ted McKenna. Mott, it was both Buffin and Overend Watts. Television is Tom Verlaine. Budgie, it's Burke Shelley. David Bowie, and at the top of the show, we heard Motörhead. Fast Eddie Clarke, and here's your big clue. It was only December the 28th when we lost Lemmy.
Yes, we have been listening to the music of people who all passed away in the month of January, and I only just scratched the surface with this list.
I could read you a list of 40 or 50 more, but I'm not going to go there. It's depressing enough, but the music is not.
That's the wonderful thing. This music is going to live with us forever, even if the people that made the music don't.
So until next week, I'm going to leave you with the obvious one.
34 years ago this week, we lost our soulmate, Steve Clark. So I'm going to finish off with his baby.
From 1981's High 'n' Dry album, this is Def Leppard and "Switch 625."
Remember them and remember them well.
