Def Leppard @ Hampton Coliseum By Newport News Daily Press
To call Thursday night's Def Leppard concert at Hampton Coliseum flashy would be an understatement.
It featured everything from fireworks to exposed buttocks.
Basically, it was a normal heavy metal rock concert.
When Def Leppard released its first album in 1980, the guys were still in their teens.
By now, they've honed their chops as well as many musicians in their field who are much older than they.
The band never cooled until it finished two encores.
Drummer Rick Allen laid down a very heavy but unobtrusive beat, and singer Joe Elliott proved to be a capable front man.
The guitarists worked well in the heavy metal tradition.
There was a slight divergence from the norm, when one of the guitar players used an acoustic guitar on one intro.
New guitarist Phil Collen seemed to be the most outstanding soloist.
