KGB-FM 101 Sky Show VIII, Jack Murphy Stadium, San Diego, CA, USA  USA.

Saturday, 17th September 1983

Show Notes

The first show in this city since April 1983 on the Billy Squier support tour. Sponsored by radio station KGB-FM 101 and billed as the Sky Show VIII featuring the world's greatest fireworks display. The first Def Leppard headline show in an outdoor stadium and biggest US show ever. An audience recording of Lep's set surfaced in 2008. Joe's then girlfriend Denise (from Sheffield working as a Nanny in the USA) videoed the show from the mixing desk. Clips from this can be seen in the VH1 Ultimate Albums: Pyromania Special.

Joe has mentioned this as being his most memorable Lep gig. Venue expanded and renamed as Qualcomm Stadium in 1997. Built in 1967 as San Diego stadium before being renamed Jack Murphy in 1980. Many photos from this show have been posted on Ross Halfin's photography website including the stage shot on the back cover of the 'Animal Instinct' book. The sets by opening bands Uriah Heep and Motley Crue have both surfaced in recent years. The band attended an end of tour party after the show and played a short impromptu set using borrowed instruments.
