Show Intro

"Greetings my fellow music lovers and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Great to be with you once again. I have lined up for you tonight about sixty minutes worth of marvellous music. Starting off with UFO."

UFO

"When Phil Mogg announced his retirement from the music industry altogether hid timing couldn't have been better could it. 'Cause it was just before the pandemic and basically nothing was gonna be happening anyway. But he did say in the statement also that he'd be more than happy to let UFO carry on with a different singer. I find those a very big pair of shoes to fill if anybody wanted to give that a try. What a fantastic band they were. It is UFo from their 1977 album Lights Out with Too Hot To Handle."

Mama's Boys

"Now for about the last six months or so I have had this riff going round in my head that I just could not pin point and it's been driving me mad. And finally just a few days ago I sat up in the middle of the night and I went I've got it. It#s the Mama's Boys."

"And before that the riff that was driving me completely mental. Finally came to me this week. It is from the album Power And Passion. The Mama's Boys and Needle In The Groove."

Ian Hunter

"So in 1984 when Def Leppard were ensconced in a little town called Loosdrecht in Holland about 35/40 minutes away from Amsterdam, where we were recording the Hysteria album. We lived in a little two up two down hotel like one of those outdoor holiday inns. We were the only people there. We didn't lock our doors. So we were in and out of each others rooms all day long. When we weren't in the studio. Ad one day I was sat in the corner of my room with my back to the door and I felt a presence in the room. And this guy was stood there watching me with my little Fostex four-track, a guitar, a keyboard, drum machine - all that kind of stuff. And he looked in and he said to me are you a musician?. To which I wanted to say No I'm a chef. But he said yeah me too. And he said I'm looking for my wife. Where's my wife and he was like half accusing me of knowing where his wife would have been. And when we established the fact that I was in room 132 and he was looking for room 32. He then announced that he was Jaco Pastorius. He was 33 years old and with a few added expletives said that everybody in the world wanted to kill him. Yes welcome to the wacky world of Jaco Pastorius who also played fantastic bass on that song that we have just heard. It is from Ian Hunter's second solo album in 1976 title track All American Alien Boy."

Note - To add to Joe's story...it turns out this guy died in September 1987 just after Hysteria was released aged 35 following a bar fight.

Nazz

"Now here's a couple of classic garage band tracks. One from across the big pond and one local. Starting off with from over there. This is the Nazz."

"And before that proving that just because you were a garage band didn't mean to say the musicianship wasn't up to scratch. This band featured Todd Rundgren on lead vocals and guitar. It is the Nazz with Open My Eyes.

The Pink Fairies

"Yes they were loose and they were sloppy. And their couldn't care less attitude endeared them a lot to the Punk movement that would come along five years later. Much loved by few. The Pink Fairies from the album Kings Of Oblivion. The song City Kids. Once actually covered by Motorhead."

"You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's time for a little break and when we come back, we're going all pyschomodo with Cockney Rebel."

Cockney Rebel

"And before that we heard Cockney Rebel featuring the wonderful songwriting of Mr. Steve Harley from their album Psychomodo we heard the immortal Tumbling Down."

Steely Dan

"I saw them live about two years ago with Steve Winwood as the opening act at the 3Arena in Dublin abd they were magnificent. Albeit there was only one original member but the songs remained the same. It is Steely Dan from the album Showbiz Kids with Do It Again."

Dirty Tricks

"Right here just beating the bell are Dirty Tricks."

"And before that a band called Dirty Tricks who I saw opening for Budgie in the mid 70s. And I thought they were a really good band. I met their singer Kenny Stewart at The Marquee in 1980. He introduced me to these litte tiny sweets called Vocalzones which are singers friends pretty much. So thank you Kenny for that 'cause I still use them on occasion. They made three albums in the 70s. They kind of fizzled out and one guy, I think the guitarist joined Rogue Mail. Somebody else joined Grand Prix. But they did reform as a Led Zeppelin cover band called Stairway To Heaven for a long time. And then reformed again as Dirty Tricks in 2009. And released an album that we just heard the song from. The album is called Up At The Nine Count. The song we just heard Down Came The Dominoes."

Frankie Miller

"What a voice. End of. That is Frankie Miller who had a massive hit with that song in the mid 70s. The album it came from is called Full House. The song is Be Good To Yourself."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure bringing these songs to you as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time."

"So until then let's go out on this one from 1978. The album Some Girls. The Rolling Stones and Shattered. Until next week see ya."
