Mike Hsu/WAAF Radio - Joe Elliott Interview Quotes

His Voice Issues

"Yeah. It's alright you know. As I've been saying, I think the easiest way to explain it to people. It;s like take your favourite quarterback and give them a torn muscle you know. Can they walk and talk and walk the dog and even throw ball with their kid?. Yes. Can they play in the Super Bowl this coming Sunday?. No."

"That was me in January. It was an injury. It wasn't worn out through singing. It was actually injured through coughing. I had a really - I was quite ill over Christmas and New Year and it didn't clear up like - whenever I've had that kind of thing before, a cough, it's cleared up in a week you know and I'm back on the horse. But this time it didn't happen and it was a new one to me. It's like well I don't really know how to deal with this because it's not like oh it's this again so I know what to do. It was a completely new kind of injury if you like."

"So I went to see all the right people who put cameras up my nose and down my throat and said yeah there's no permanent damage. There's no nodes. There's no polyps. It's just a bit raw. It needs complete and utter rest for four, five, six weeks and then you should be fine. So I've started nursing it back in a little bit by doing some warming up and as you can hear I'm talking to you. And I don't have any issues with any other part of my life at the moment. I'm not singing you know until I think 2nd of May is the first show so I've got plenty of time to get myself back into shape."

Preparing For The Summer Tour/A Month To Warm Up?

"Well on this particular tour it'll be something like that because as I say I'm stating from a different head space but on regular tours. I normally come in about ten days before the first show. I do, you know, I get into it. I've got all the - because I've got a studio at home. So it's dead easy for me to get in front of a microphone and speakers and sing along to live album. Or sing a long to recorded tapes of old shows and stuff like that. So that I get into - I sing myself into shape before we get into a room together."

"So it just saves time and effort you know. I've never been the kind of guy that can just wilfully walk up to a mic and expect everything to be the way it was when the last tour ended. It's like a sportsman. As you say we've got these schedules that are insane really for a band of our stature, let's put...of our age!. And you've got to be in tip top shape to be able to pull them off. And then you've got the day to day things to deal with like no matter how much you put up with it. If somebody who's stood next to you in the queue for an aeroplane coughs in your face. You're screwed. You know there's nothing you can do about that. You've gotta make sure the air cons are turned off in the hotel an do all the right things like avoid nightclubs till 6am and all that kind of stuff."

"You've gotta do your job well. You've gotta get into training just like a sportsman. I work on my own and then we work as a band and then we go out there and do it. It's never normally a month. I mean we rehearse for maybe three of four days before a tour because everybody plays along to the records so that they've got it in their DNA. And then when we get together everybody knows what they're doing."

"We never walk into a room going how does it go? because everybody does their homework. And I think that's what makes us the band that we are. We don't - we try not to screw up as often as other people might."

Band Longevity/New Def Leppard Album

"You listen to the new Def Leppard album and you can hear there's a cohesion there that - it sounds like a team. You know and it's a good record and we're capable of doing these things for as long as we want to do them. And that's the important thing is like nobody pushes you into corners. We do whatever we wanna do because we've seen so many things happen. That it's like we have to be in charge of our own destiny and when it's time to stop we'll know when it's time to stop."

"Rick - he was so determined to carry on that we were never gonna get in the way and stop him. There was no way we were gonna say you can't do that, let's get another drummer. It was like OK if you think you can do it, you're still in the band. Of course you know because we're more like brothers than you know than people that are signed by contract to each other which we're not. If any one of us wants to leave, they can. There's no - we don't have a contract. We're a real band in that sense. We just do it for the fun of it."

"We were signed to a record label but we aren't tied to each other where one of us is not allowed to do something else. That's why everybody has got their side projects. They can do anything they like. We get together and it works and that to me is a real band."
