Show Intro

"Evening all, welcome once again to The Joe Elliott show on the wonderful Planet Rock. What have we got lined up for you tonight. Well 60 minutes, or thereabouts, of some amazing music. But I'm using the template of a bit of memorabilia that a friend of mine sent to me earlier this week. As the song choices for this particular show. Now as you all know Def Leppard have been touring the world on a stadium tour with Motley Crue for over a year now. A mammoth tour. On a mini break at the moment. But I wanna throw this all the way back to 43 years ago, 1980. When this particular band we're about to hear were playing their first ever stadium show in America. Fourth on the bill. And this is the song that they opened up with."

Def Leppard

"Yep Saturday the 19th July The 1980 World Series Of Rock. At the Lakefront Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. It was Def Leppard's first ever stadium show. We were fourth on the bill. To whom we shall find out over the next few songs. Let's just analyse what we heard. That is us from Oxford New Theatre in 1980 just a few months earlier. From a live album called When The Walls Came Tumblin' Down. Which is part of The Early Years box set. 1979 to 1981. And when you listen to it I for sure sound like a deer in the headlights. I had no idea what I was doing. And we as a band were learning how to do this in front of thousands and thousands of people. Making all our mistakes in public. Great learning curve. As my Father would have said. Originally featured on the 1980 debut album On Through The Night. That's the live version of the song It Could Be You. Which we opened the set with."

Eddie Money

"So who else was on that bill I hear you ask. Well working from third upwards an artist that would open for Def Leppard on our second stadium tour three years later. This is Eddie Money.

"And before that we heard Eddie Money. A gentleman that we'd have the great pleasure of having open for us three years later when we played the Jack Murphy Stadium in September 1983. Jack Murphy Stadium being in San Diego, California. But there he is taken from The Sound Of Money. His greatest hits. It is Eddie Money with Two Tickets To Paradise."

J. Geils Band

"Taken from Flashback The Very Best of. That is the J. Geils Band. A band that we'd only ever played with once. And it was on that particular show The World Series Of Rock back in 1980. But what a fantastic live band they were. The frontman Pete Wolff absolutely astonishing at getting the crowd going. The song that we just heard Love Stinks."

Bob Seger

"So who did headline that show back in 1980. Well if it wasn't for the likes of whispering Bob Harris on The Old Grey Whistle Test we may never have heard of this gentleman because he wasn't that popular in the UK. But he was enormous in the States. So much so he could headline stadiums. ."

"And before that the headliner of The World Series Of Rock stadium show Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band. Taken there from the Ultimate Hits. A song once covered by Metallica Turn The Page."

Pat Travers

"Veering away from the stadium show just for a few minutes there. But staying on track because Def Leppard opened for Pat Travers just a month or so before that stadium show. We did a run of 11 shows on the west coast of America starting off at the legendary Santa Monica Civic on the 20th May. That's Pat from his debut album back in 1976 with Medley, Part 1 And 2."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up, a gentleman that we spent six weeks touring with in that summer of 1980. And we'd moved up to third on the bill."

Ted Nugent

"Epic gonzoid stuff there from Ted Nugent. From his 1975 debut album of the same name. All 8 minutes and 22 seconds of Stranglehold."

Scorpions

"So Ted Nugent headlined. Def Leppard third on the bill. So who was in the middle. Well I'll give you a clue. They're from Hannover in Germany."

"Now who was on in between Def Leppard and Ted Nugent. Well it was the Scorpions. Of course it was 1980 and they were promoting the album Lovedrive from which we just heard the title track."

Judas Priest

"Wonderful stuff there from their live album Unleashed In The East. that is Judas Priest with their take on the old Joan Beaz folk tune Diamonds And Rust. Nw Def Leppard toured twice with Judas Priest in 1980. Once just after we'd finished with Pat Travers and once just after we'd finished with Ted Nugent. We did some great shows together. But we also had some great fun on the days off. Myself and Sav, KK and Glenn used to go golfing. And in the days when Golf carts didn't have speed regulators on them. The designated drivers being the boys from Judas Priest would take these things and just shoot them off each tee through the air with the greatest of ease. There's no wonder I have a bad back."

Show Outro

"And that my friends on this particular trip down memory lane is about it for this week. It's been very nostalgic. Brings a tear to a glass eye. That kind of stuff, doesn't it.

"Now then what am I gonna end the show with. Well you may have read heard or seen over the last few days that the wonderful gentleman that is Brian May just celebrated a birthday. And you may also have seen that Def Leppard took to social media to celebrate his birthday by changing the words to one of his more famous songs. Thought I'd play the original tonight. From the album A Day At The Races. This is Queen and Tie Your Mother Down. Until next week see ya!."
