Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Great to be with you once again. But boy am I gonna name drop tonight. Whose orbits have a been flying round the last few days. Incredible amount of people that were involved in the Taylor Hawkins tribute show at the LA Forum just a couple of days ago. Absolutely unbelievable. Had such a fantastic time. And watching some incredible acts perform. And performing ourselves. Myself, Sav and Phil did a couple of numbers. One of them with Miley Cyrus. And went down a treat actually."

"It was actually really really cool to do something very different to what we normally do. In that respect. And play with the Foos. I mean Photograph and Rock Of Ages with the likes of Dave Grohl on guitar. Wow, never thought that would happen. It was fantastic and we are gonna celebrate once again Taylor Hawkins tonight. Gonna play a bunch of songs that were played on the night of the memorial show. Starting off with this wonderful piece of work by The Police."

The Police

"So the area that was allocated to most of the guests that were performing on the night was just on the outside of the arena. It was a square of caravans and in the centre was this kind of holding area. Like a lounge for the acts to just relax. Couches, a little bar. Tables and a giant screen with some speakers either side. So we could watch the gig from the comfort of our little compound. Much more convenient than running in and out of the venue all night long. And of course most musicians were just wandering around and high five-ing each other and saying hi or ignoring each other. Or having really good chats with the likes of Joan Jett and Tommy and Nikki from Motley Crue."

"And a fantastic ten minutes conversation with a guy I'd never met before. But just idolised as a musician since I was a kid. Stewart Copeland from The Police. One of the most unique and brilliant drummers from my youth. Lovely lovely guy. We just heard him there from the complete collection called Message In A Box. It's The Police with a song that on the night was played with Stewart Copeland on the drums of course. But Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals absolutely crushing Next To You."

Van Halen

"OK so what did we get when we put one of the greatest drummers that most people have never heard of Josh Freese. Absolutely unbelievable, on the kit along with Justin Hawkins from The Darkness and Wolfgang Van Halen. Well you got this."

"And before that we heard Van Halen which was represented on the night by the son of Eddie. Wolfgang who is an absolutely incredible player. Plays very much like his father but he doesn't use a wang bar. Which is very very impressive indeed. Justin Hawkins killing it on vocals of course. And Josh Freese on the drums absolutely incredible. But the version we just heard the original of course from the album 1984. Hot For Teacher."

James Gang

"Now I can honestly say that in all my years I never ever thought that I would get to see that band, the original line up of that band, play live. I had a poster of one of their albums on my bedroom wall when I was 10, 11 years old. And I've loved them all my life. And I can't believe I actually got to see them live. Albeit on a TV screen. But it was just phenomenal to watch the James Gang perform. Tell you a little story which is quite funny actually. So I'd picked my shirt to wear for the show and lo and behold Joe Walsh was wearing exactly the same shirt."

"And I'm looking at him and I'm looking at the guys and I'm saying well we share the same name. We share the same hair. But I'm damned if I'm wearing the same shirt. So I had to go in and have a bit of a wardrobe malfunction correction moment. And change my shirt. But it was fantastic to watch them play. And they played that song that we just heard there. It's taken right now from a collection called 15 Greatest Hits. It's the James Gang with Funk #49."

Rush

"Now I'm not one to spread unconfirmed gossip but there was in the compound on the night rumours abound about this next band maybe maybe going back out on the road once again. They haven't toured for a very long time for obvious reasons. And because it was the Taylor Hawkins memorial show there was I think at last count 15 different drummers involved. So it was almost like an audition. Now this next band played with three different drummers on the night. Danny Carey, of course Dave Grohl. But also Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is Rush."

Soundgarden

"And before that one of two Soundgarden that were performed on the night. Matt Chamberlain on drums and get this Krist Novoselic from Nirvana on bass. So there's a really cool cross over right there. And Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless singing. And who as a child actor was Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch. but boy has she grown up to have a great set of pipes and front a really great band in The Pretty Reckless. But she absolutely killed it when she went out there and sang Black Hole Sun."

Note - Joe got the drummer's name wrong it was actually Matt Cameron on drums from Soundgarden and now Pearl Jam. Matt Chamberlain was once a drummer in Pearl Jam in 1991 after the original one quit. He was also in the 'Alive' video and then left before they really took off.

"You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. This week it's a summary of the LA version of the Taylor Hawkins memorial show. Most of you I guess got to see in one form or another the UK version a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't there but we were there for this one and boy wasn't it a great night. Coming up some fantastic what we might call grunge music sung on the night by the girl who played Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch. You couldn't make it up."

Queen

"Now I did warn you at the top of the show that I was probably gonna name drop. Right so here goes. So the night before the show I went for a lovely Italian meal with Brian May and Roger Taylor. And we had a really nice very relaxing evening. Just chin wag, chin wag, chin wag and a few glasses of wine. it was just a really relaxing evening. Great fun. They were in great form. As they were the following night when they performed. And I was always gonna play this one because as much as I love Freddie Mercury's voice to death. I'm absolutely obsessed with Roger Taylor's voice. So I wanted to play this one. They did it really well on the night. And it's a great song. From 1975's A Night At The Opera we just heard Queen with I'm In Love With My Car."

Alanis Morissette

"So Phil Collen knew Taylor Hawkins all the way back to the late 80s when he was just a kid behind a counter in a guitar store in Southern California that Phil would frequent. To buy strings and picks etc. And he would just be the 'Hey dude how ya doin?' guy. Well cut to a few years later Def Leppard are doing Top Of The Pops. And in walks this kid and he goes 'Phil!'. And Phil goes 'Taylor, what are you doing here?'. And he says 'Well I'm playing drums for Alanis Morissette'."

"And before that we heard Alanis Morissette who Taylor Hawkins played drums with. I don't think he actually played on the album. He was a touring drummer until he was kind of poached by the Foo Fighters. And I think that left a little bit of animosity between Alanis and the Foo Fighters for a long time. But if you saw the hug on the night between Dave Grohl and Alanis Morissette. It went on for about 30, 45 seconds. I think that was reconciliation right there. Fantastic stuff from the album Jagged Little Pill we just heard Alanis Morissette with You Oughta Know."

Note - Since this is my specialist subject...Taylor and Alanis met up again a few years ago and made up, performing 'You Learn' together in Malibu, CA at a Benefit concert. This was after Taylor had made a few comments about her lyrics after joining the Foo Fighters which caused the issues. Taylor then presented her with an Billboard's 2019 Women in Music award in 2019. Watch the videos below.

Foo Fighters

"If there was ever a choke up moment on the night it was that. That very song. Played on the night. Ooh I'm actually getting hairs on my neck standing up right now. Played on the night by Shane Hawkins. Taylor's 15 year old son. Whoah it's even difficult to tak about. Absolutely killed it. He was so fantastic on the night. it was just chilling to watch him play. He absolutely just adored his father. And he was so so so so good on that particular song.It is from the album The Colour And The Shape 1997. The Foo Fighters My Hero. And boy what an apt song to play."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, on what has been my summary of the Taylor Hawkins memorial show from the Los Angeles Forum, is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. What a great way to end everything. We finished our tour three weeks ago. We stuck around to do this. And now I can finally relax after having contributed to something that we'll never see the likes of again probably. And the fact that Pat Smear and Dave Grohl. In fact the entire Foo Fighters organisation was so welcoming to myself, Phil and Sav. It was a wonderful thing to be involved in. And seeing all these people perform and turn up on the night to honour Taylor Hawkins.

"And now I can finally relax which I actually started doing the night after because I went back to the LA Forum to watch Roxy Music. Who have reformed to celebrate 50 years of being a band. And t was a wonderful gig. If you're a Roxy Music fan they're about to come to the UK. I highly recommend you get a ticket if you don't have one. In fact if there's even any left. They were brilliant on the night. So I'm gonna play this and end the show with this one. From the album For Your Pleasure. This is Roxy Music and Do The Strand. Until next week see ya!."
