Fan Review -- By Dan Clavadetscher

Since November 2005, Def Leppard has released a well-received cover songs collection, played 50 concerts as part of a phenomenally successful co-headlining tour with Journey and performed on five national television talk shows in the United States. On Thursday, the band made its first promotional appearance for the soon-to-be-released deluxe edition of Hysteria, when it pre-recorded a two-song set for the highly-rated syndicated program The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Leppard’s appearance will air in the U.S. on Friday, Oct. 13.

Filmed at the NBC Studios in Burbank, Calif., The Ellen DeGeneres Show attracts a predominantly female audience. This was the case on Thursday as I was one of approximately 20 men in a crowd of about 200 people. With my mom in tow, we sat through three guests until Def Leppard closed out the festivities. First up was a woman who shocked the audience and left many speechless with 30-inch fingernails. Following a subdued appearance by former Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's Ty Pennington brought his positive, hyperkinetic style to the stage.

Following a commercial break, DeGeneres held up the deluxe edition of Hysteria and introduced the band. Two doors opened as Def Leppard tore into a crunching version of Pour Some Sugar on Me. Although it was odd to see a group of moms and grandmothers rocking out to a song that has been adopted by strippers, Joe Elliott, Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen and the Ricks seemed comfortable and highly energized.

After the show signed off, DeGeneres informed the audience that the band would perform one more song. Despite numerous requests to play Photograph, Collen, sporting a double neck guitar, played the opening notes to the T Rex classic and the band's latest single, 20th Century Boy. Although the crowd was mostly unfamiliar with the song, they were quickly won over and danced throughout. According to one of the program's producers, the tune was recorded for possible inclusion in a future show.

As the crowd exited the stage, each person was handed a promotional copy of the two-disc Hysteria CD. The accompanying booklet features a lengthy essay written in August 2006 by David Fricke, as well as numerous photos of the band and its singles from the Hysteria era.
