The Rock Show with Johnnie Walker - 28th May 2022 Quotes - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Time now for My Rock God. Every week an artist reveals their rock god to us. This week it's Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen. Phil has been with the band since 1982 during the recording of the Pyromania album. He's currently deep in rehearsals with Def Leppard for their upcoming US tour with Motley Crue which begins early next month.Def Leppard's 12th album Diamond Star Halos came out yesterday. And before we hear from Phil here's a track from it. This is Fire It Up.

Phil Collen - "Hello I'm Phil Collen from Def Leppard and the artist I'd like to choose as my Rock God is Mick Jagger."

Phil Collen - "Have you ever noticed you know a lot of English sing with an American accents. We kind of learnt that from American pop culture. But I think Mick Jagger was the gateway of the bridge that kind of influenced everyone who sings rock music."

Phil Collen - "Mick Jagger and The Stones kind of hit on that very early on and made it their own Rolling Stones thing."

Phil Collen - "The songwriting, you know, songs like Sympathy For The Devil. When you first hear it it's haunting. I was totally influenced by that and still am."

Phil Collen - "And I have a funny story really with Mick, about Mick Jagger. We were recording our Hysteria album in the mid 80s in Holland. Jeff Beck was playing guitar for Mick Jagger on his new solo album."

Phil Collen - "I was sneaking around trying to listen through the door. If you've ever seen a studio door, you can't hear they're like a bank vault."

Phil Collen - "And all of a sudden the door opened up and it's Mick Jagger. And he's like Eh man, yeah man come on in."

Phil Collen - "I went in and sat on the couch and there's Jeff Beck playing guitar. It was amazing. And there's Mick Jagger and he's actually singing in front of me. It was like surreal."

Phil Collen - "He was actually doing a live vocal to one of the songs in the control room."

Phil Collen - "It was such an amazing moment for me. And you're always scared to meet your idols in case they disappoint, but he really didn't. For lots of reasons you know that's my Rock God."

That's Gimme Shelter. Mick Jagger was the Rock God of Def Leppard's Phil Collen. The new Def Leppard album Diamond Star Halos is out now.
