Def Leppard appeared on the cover of iconic US magazine Rolling Stone to promote the Adrenalize album on this day in 1992.

The band were interviewed ahead of the North American release of the Adrenalize album which had come out on 31st March.

The cover featured Rick, Joe, Sav and Phil from a photo shoot by Mark Seliger which contained one of the first pictures of Rick Allen without a shirt on after his accident.

In an interview titled 'Def Leppard: To Hell & Back' the band were interviewed by David Fricke who had written their 1987 'Animal Instinct' biography.

They were interviewed as they conducted rehearsals for a new guitar player Los Angeles at Mates Studios in Burbank.

The five page article titled 'To Hell And Back' told the story of the making of 'Adrenalize', how the band dealt with the death of Steve Clark, the 1991 Glam Slam show in Dublin, preparing for the world tour and choosing the album title.

The article mentions how the rehearsals were going and that Vivian was up against Huwey Lucas, an unknown guitarist from Birmingham, England.

Vivian was later unveiled as the new guitar player at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert in London on 20th April.

Rolling Stone 1992 - Def Leppard Interview Quotes

February 1992 New Guitarist Auditions

"But this session is real history – and hysteria (so to speak) – in the making, because Def Leppard is going into virgin territory: It's going to jam. The band decides to have a crack at Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" to give guitar candidate Hewey Lucas, a talented young unknown from Birmingham, England, a chance to flash his solo chops. "We are definitely not God's gift to jammers," Allen says later, "because we spend so much time in the studio producing and reproducing our records."

Not Breaking Up

"At one time or another," says Savage, "everyone in the band has said: 'This is nonsense. It isn't worth it. I'm leaving.' The one thing we're fortunate about is that no two or more members have said it at the same time."

Choosing The Adrenalize Album Title

Rick Savage - "A good one was the album title. I wanted to call the album Dementia. I liked the idea of having a trilogy of albums ending with ia. Phil thought it was cool but wondered if it was a little contrived, like we were running out of good ia-sounding words. Joe hated it with a passion. After two and a half hours of discussion, he was so pissed off that we were still talking about this one word that he just turned around and said, 'Well, as far as I'm concerned, you might as well call the album Bob!'
