Show Intro

"Greetings everyone and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Great to be with you once again. I have in my humble opinion lined up for you tonight some magnificent music. Gonna start off this one because once again that pesky grim reaper has been kicking in the front door of our rock and roll house. And not only did we lose Tim Bogart this week who you're probably more familiar with for his work with Jeff Beck than anything else. But also a childhood hero of mine from one of the most influential bands specifically on punk rock that there ever was. His name was Sylvain Sylvain. In his memory and in his honour we play the New York Dolls."

New York Dolls

"Yes I had the great honour of meeting the mighty Sylvain Sylvain about 12 years ago at a gig in a place called Marlay Park which is about ten minutes from my house here in Dublin. What a lovely guy. Really sweet gentleman. Great rhythm guitar player from one of the most influential bands specifically on new wave and punk there ever was. The New York Dolls there from their second album in 1974. The album is called Too Much Too Soon. The song we heard, the opening track, Babylon. And more of the New York Dolls later on."

The Tubes

"Till then let's head over to San Francisco and sample a little bit of The Tubes."

"And before that The Tubes produced by Todd Rundgren. Who actually produced the first New York Dolls album as it happens. But this from an album called Remote Control which came out in 1979 and the song TV Is King."

Wizzard

"Boy could that man write a song. That man of course is Roy Wood. That's his band Wizzard. The album is Wizzard Brew. The song, the huge hit, Ball Park Incident."

Pat Travers

"Not many people can claim to come all the way from Canada to London. Jump up on stage on somebody else's gig at The Marquee, grab the guitar and start playing and earn themselves a record contract. Well this gentleman did. His name is Pat Travers."

"And before that Pat Travers from his second album in 1977. The album is Makin' Magic. it features Nicko McBrain on the drums. The song we heard Hooked On Music.

George Harrison

"Yes Wah-Wah indeed. What a line-up there was at that gig. Ringo Starr on the drums. Eric Clapton on guitar. Badfinger as p[art of the backing band. Wow. That's George Harrison. It is the concert for Bangladesh. That was performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City I think 1970. '71 maybe. The song Wah-Wah."

"You're listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's time for a little break. And when we come back, it's a bit of a mystery with the mighty Quo."

Status Quo

"And before that Status Quo from the album Blue For You with a magnificent piece of work called Mystery Song."

10CC

"They were such an expressive band. Four completely different personalities come together to make some magnificent music. 10CC is the band I'm talking about. The album How Dare You. With a song that caused a lot of controversy on its release with air stewardesses. The song I'm Mandy, Fly Me. A big hit for them."

Utopia

"Now if you're a fan of Def Leppard or just aware of our music you'll know that we are huge fans of harmony vocals. Queen being our biggest influences in thtat particular direction. Here's a band lesser known but just as influential in heir own way. Featuring Todd Rundgren this is Utopia."

"And before that Utopia. The magic of Todd Rundgren. What a great arranger that guy is. The album 1977's Ra. The song we heard Magic Dragon Theatre."

UFO

"Another band that were hugely influential on Def Leppard. More for their cockiness though. With a bass player with his black and white striped pants stood legs akimbo and his guitar about ten notches too low. Pete Way. The mysterious guitar player in black, Michael Schenker. And the fantastic frontman who was a great lyricist. One of the greatest rock lyricists of the mid to late 70s. Phil Mogg. Yes I am talking about UFO. That particular song though comes from the line up that featured Paul Chapman Michael Schenker's replacement. The album is The Wild, The Willing And The Innocent. The song we heard Couldn't Get It Right."

The Stranglers

"Now to one of the most successful bands to come out of the whole new wave movement. This is The Stranglers."

"And before that The Stranglers magnificent stuff from the album The Raven. Big hit from them. A song called Duchess."

The Undertones

"Possibly, no probably the only song in the history of rock music to feature the words subuteo and for those of you that don't know folks. That little game where you flicked a was very popular among certain members of Def Leppard when we were recording On Through Th Night back in 1979 at Ringo Starr's house in Tittenhurst Park in Ascot. And it was all going swimmingly until Pete Willis started kneeling on my players on purpose. But that's another story. There The Undertones from the album Hypnotised with My Perfect Cousin."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time."

So until then let's go out the way that we came in. In celebrating the life and music of one Mr. Sylvain Slyvain. Songwriter and rhythm guitarist for the mighty New York Dolls. Here from their debut album produced by Todd Rundgren back in 1973 is Jet Boy. Rock in peace Sylvain Sylvain. Till next week see ya."
