14 Years Ago DEF LEPPARD Recognised As SHEFFIELD LEGENDS (Video)

Def Leppard 2006. By dltourhistory

Def Leppard were honoured as Sheffield Legends in front of the town hall in their home city on this day in 2006 and footage is available.

The band received their honour in front of the Sheffield Town Hall in a short ceremony the day before their show at Sheffield Arena.

It was voted for by fans all over the world. The pavement currently includes 17 plaques for others including Gordon Banks, Sean Bean, Joe Cocker, Sebastian Coe, Michael Palin and London 2012 Olympian Jessica Ennis.

The band and many fans attended the ceremony which took place at 12:30pm.

The band members were joined by keyboardist Dick Decent from The Cybernauts who sadly passed away in late 2012 following a long illness. He went on to perform with them during 'When Love & Hate Collide' at the Sheffield/London shows and again at the Dublin/Donington shows in 2009.

Watch the full event video below as posted by hydearchives. Taken from a DVD filmed by a local fan who attended the event.

Many of the Instagram posts from the last few years are also shown below. Including one by Phil Collen.

16th June 2006 - Lord Mayor Jackie Drayton Speech

"Well it really does give me great pleasure to be here today on this very special occasion. I have to say that when I first came to Sheffield in 1979 I went to work at Westfield Adult Education Centre and actually you had your first concert at Westfield (Joe & Sav nod). And they were still talking about it then in '79 saying they thought it was, you were gonna be big and you certainly have lived up to those expectations. You've done a great, great service to Sheffield. We all know Sheffield. Made In Sheffield mark is a really important thing. It's on Cutlery, it's on Silverware and it's on Steel but it's also on music and also on Def Leppard, wonderful ambassadors for our city, Def Leppard!.".

"So we just want to thank everybody that did vote and it's a pleasure to be on the same pavement as Gordon Banks who let's not forget did save - the best save ever against Pele in 1970. And while we're on the subject of football - Go England!.".

16th June 2006 - Rick Savage Speech

16th June 2006 - Rick Savage Interview Quote

"This is special even for the guys who do not come from here. The band came out of Sheffield. It's not even a question of being honoured, we're kind of thankful for being remembered - to still be around people who know who we are."

"It's part of Sheffield culture that people, and I count myself in this, tend to underrate themselves. There's a lot of good around here and it's a great city to live in - and I don't think people recognise that enough."

16th June 2006 - Rick Allen Interview Quote

"This is really good. Any kind of honour is, especially when it's somewhere you are so connected to. Everybody feels really good about it. Sheffield is the nucleus of this band, It's part of our DNA and all I ever knew until I was 16 years old. Even though I am from Dronfield, Sheffield was the place I would come to to have fun and meet friends."
