Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. This week guess where. Yes we're in Spain. Specifically Barcelona. it is a day off before tomorrow nights final show of this European run that started way back at the beginning of June in Sweden. We have just come through Germany. We did two football stadiums with Bon Jovi. Fantastic. Dusseldorf and Munich and it was insane. It really was. We also spent four days in Berlin and I'm gonna be touching on that fact later on in the show playing some music that is attached to that amazing city."

"We have sixty minutes of I would call this week very eccentric music. Starting off with this. This is Punishment Of Luxury."

Punishment Of Luxury

"They were known as post Punk. They were from Newcastle. They were also sometimes known as Punishment Deluxe But that is Punishment Of Luxury from 1978. The album Laughing Academy. the song we just heard Puppet Life."

Sparks

"Kind of reminds me of Sparks a little bit. So let's play some Sparks."

"And before that from the 1976 album Indiscreet we heard Sparks with In The Future."

Craig Bartock

"That is a gentleman called Craig Bartock who actually plays guitar these days for Heart. But back in 2006 he was making his own music. From an album called The Finer Points If Instinct that's a really crazy song. And I love it to death. It's called Doll House."

David Bowie

"I mentioned at the top of the show how we'd spent the best part of four days in Berlin. What an amazing city especially since that wall came down in 1989. It's really taken on a life of it's own in recent times. But for me the important thing about being there was getting out and about in that city and visiting Hansa Studios. This is the famed Hansa Studios frequented by the likes of Depeche Mode. US did Achtung Baby there or most of it. And also though of course for me specifically the mid 70s when David Bowie did what's known as his trilogy of Berlin albums. Which was Low, Lodger and Heroes. And to walk through that building and stand in the spot where David Bowie sang Heroes was very emotional. I was gonna play the song Heroes. I'm actually not gonna do that. I'm gonna go for something that David Bowie did much much later on in his career. This is all about the time that he spent in Berlin."

"And before that David Bowie from the album The Next Day. His story of his time in Berlin. The song Where Are We Now?."

Lou Reed

"From his 1973 follow up to Transformer that is Lou Reed. The album was produced by Bob Ezrin. It is called Berlin. The song that we heard Lady Day."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show on Planet Rock. This week coming to you all the way from Barcelona in Spain on the eve of our last show of this European run. Time for a little break, and when we come back, we're gonna experience two sides of Peter Gabriel."

Genesis

"And before that Genesis with the title track of their epic album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway."

Peter Gabriel

"Very spooky stuff indeed there from Peter Gabriel. I love how they got that effect that sounds like somebody walking on floorboards. It was actually done I believe by using a guitar pick on a piano string. That is from the album called Peter Gabriel. But aren't they all?. In other words it's the third solo album from 1980. The song Intruder."

U2

"OK back to Berlin once again. Specifically artists that have used the Hansa Studios. And I pick this next song because I could actually see the subject matter of said song out of my hotel window. This is U2."

"And before that U2 who made a big deal of recording there. The song that we heard, and I could see it out of my hotel window. Came from the album Achtung Baby. The song is Zoo Station."

Iggy Pop

"That song just makes you wanna idiot dance all over the hotel room. It really does. I just love that to death. What a great drum sound as well. That is Iggy Pop. The title track of the album Lust For Life recorded at Hansa Studios in Berlin."

"Now where do we go from there?. All that electronic industrial stuff. Well I think it's time for a cockney knees up. This is the Heavy Metal Kids."

"And before that the Heavy Metal Kids. It's these days a bonus track on the album Kitsch. I believe it was the B-Side of their almost hit single She's No Angel. the song we heard Hey Little Girl."

Michael Monroe

"He's on the bill with us tomorrow night at the Barcelona Rock Fest. Along with the likes on Dream Theater and Testament. Dee Snider, Europe. My goodness we're not even on stage till 11pm tomorrow night. And by the way he is Michael Monroe ex of Hanoi Rocks. That from his collection called The Best. The song Can't Go Home Again."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, all the way from Barcelona in Spain on what is the eve of our very last European show for this year, that's about it. I shall be back with you next week from a place called Moncton in Canada which will be the second of 11 Canadian shows that we are about to perform."

"So until then I'm gonna leave you with this. I did say at the top of the show that it was a pretty eccentric show this week. Let's stay that way for the next three or four minutes albeit with a hit single. From 1973 this is Wizzard featuring the mighty Roy Wood and See My Baby Jive. Until next week see ya!."
