Show Intro

"So do tell folks have you had your fill of Christmas leftovers. Of dried up gravy, of soggy mince pies, of flat drinks, of full ashtrays. Ugh!. Christmas songs, it is over and done with for another year folks. You can put all your ornaments away but please do not turn off your radio because we have sixty minutes of fantastic music moving us nicely into the year 2019. We're gonna go all the way back to 1976. This is UFO."

UFO

"It's funny how sometimes you'll hear a song for the very first time and never forget where you were. I was round at my friend's house in Sheffield. It was 1976 and Alan Freeman was on the radio and he played that song and we decided to jump on the bus. Went down town to Bradley's Records and bought the album. the album is No Heavy Pettin'. The band UFO. The song Natural Thing."

Thin Lizzy

"So let's go back to 1973 and a band that were still waiting for their big breakthrough. This is Thin Lizzy."

"And before that from 1973 before their big breakthrough. The album us Vagabonds Of The Western World. The song Little Darling."

E.L.O.

"I was very shocked to read an article this week from 1973 that just popped up on the Internet that Marc Bolan actually played on that particular song. He was good friends with Jeff Lynne all the way back to when Marc was on Tyrannosaurus Rex and Jeff Lynne was in a band called The Idle Race. That is E.L.O. however from the album On The Third Day. the song Ma-Ma-Ma Belle."

Led Zeppelin

"Now Led Zeppelin were renowned for not releasing singles in the UK. But they did however occasionally release them in the US. In 1970 thy release the Immigrant Song which basically means it had to have something on the B-Side. Which just happened to be a non album track."

"And before that we heard Led Zeppelin. The B-Side of one of their very few singles they ever released in the US. The A-Side was the Immigrant Song. It was 1970. The song we heard, a non album track, Hey Hey What Can I Do."

Dr. Hook

"I play that to honour the memory of one Mr. Ray Sawyer. A member of Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show who sadly earlier this week passed away at the grand old age of 81. Nice little anecdote for you here. Back in December of 1979 Def Leppard were moving into Startling Studios, a living complex. It was a huge big rambling mansion once owned by John Lennon. It's where he shot the video for Imagine. He sold it on to Ringo Starr who rented it out to bands. We were one of those bands and as we were moving in on a Friday night Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show were moving out. So as both crews were switching gear we were hanging out with those guys in the wreck room. Playing pool, playing darts and drinking probably way too much. I got challenged to a game of pool by Ray Sawyer and I beat him. So what did I do?. I phoned my friend in Sheffield and said, 'You're not gonna believe this, but I just beat Sylvia's Mother at pool.' And he very dryly replied, 'Well I'm not surprise, the guy's only got on eye'. That folks is Sheffield humour and an absolutely true story. There was Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show with their breakthrough UK single from 1972 Sylvia's Mother."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock, the first one of the year as it happens. Time for a little break though and when we come back, Crisis, what crisis?. Yes it's Supertramp."

Supertramp

"Before that Supertramp from their 1975 follow up to the wonderful album Crime Of The Century. This album is Crisis, What Crisis?. the song Sister Moonshine."

The Faces

"I won that album in about 1976 in one of the then weekly rock magazines. All you had to do was send in a bunch of coupons and if you were the lucky recipient a week later then came this big square cardboard envelope and whoo out it came. A vinyl copy of what was their Greatest Hits really. It's called Snakes And Ladders. Of course I have since bought it many times on CD. It's The Faces. the song Silicone Grown."

Queen

"Well they've just announced a string of dates in the USA. Let's hope they announce a string of dates in the UK pretty soon. This is Queen."

"Who we just heard before Ian Hunter from their 1978 album Jazz with Dead On Time."

Ian Hunter

"When that album was originally released in 1976 I was really not sure about it at all because to be honest with ya I just wanted more of the same of what I heard in 1975 on his debut album. But I have so grown to love the album these days. It is All American Alien Boy by Ian Hunter. the song we heard You Nearly Did Me In. And yes if you were thinking that the backing vocals on that song sounded rather familiar. It is Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen."

Pink Fairies

"Now here's another British band that took a totally different approach when it came to vocals, and guitar and bass and drums. And from 1971 dare I say Punkish?. Yes this is the Pink Fairies."

"And before that the Pink Fairies from their beautifully messy Never Never Land album with The Snake."

Be Bop Deluxe

"1972 gave us Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. 1973 gave us Jet Silver And The Dolls Of Venus. So more than a little nod to David Bowie methinks. That is Be Bop Deluxe featuring Wakefield's finest Mr. Bill Nelson on guitar and vocals. The album Axe Victim."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, on what is my first show of the year 2019, is about it for this week. As always it has been an amazing pleasure to do this for ya. Let's get together next week at exactly the same time and do it again."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this. From 1979 her debut album Night Out. This is the wonderful Ellen Foley and this is definitely what she isn't. With her great version of The Rolling Stones classic Stupid Girl. Until next week see ya!."
