DEF LEPPARD Start 2018 HYSTERIA Tour In HAWAII (Show Report)
Def Leppard played the first show of the 2018 Hysteria tour last night in Honolulu, HI with 20 songs performed.
The show took place at the 8,800 capacity Blaisdell Center Arena.
The first of two nights here and the opening show of the 'Hysteria & More' section of the 2018 world tour. Actually played earlier today UK time (ended at around 9;30am BST).
The band last played Honolulu onon the 1983 Pyromania World Tour.
The third show the band have played in Honolulu and the third time at this venue.
It was first opened in September 1964.
The first visit here took place at the Blaisdell Center Arena just a few days after the legendary Jack Murphy Stadium show in San Diego at the end of the North American Pyromania tour leg.
A second night was played at the same venue. It was to be the last American show played by Rick Allen before his car accident.
Last night's show marked a return to the Hawaiian Islands for the first time in just over 35 years.
The 'Hysteria' album was played in full and in sequence for the 15th time after the 11 VIVA! Hysteria shows of 2013 in Las Vegas plus three further shows in France and Spain in the same year.
The pre-Hysteria setlist featured just six songs and there was no intermission before the Hysteria set.
Unlike VIVA! Hysteria Phil started 'Women' at the front of the stage (not on a raised platform) although the same intro music was used before he started to play.
The stage was similar to the recent North American tour but the lighting rig was static and did not move up and down. The city name was displayed on the big screen behind Rick. The three moveable screens and a Thrust stage were also not used here. All other video screens were the same along with the ramps either side of Rick's drum kit.
The same show intro was used with the video countdown and Depeche Mode cover played before 'Excitable' and the blue/purple lights. The screen visuals were the same as used for the regular 'Hysteria' songs on the 2018 tour plus those from 2013 such as the hanging light bulbs for 'Love And Affection'.
The usual encore of 'Rock Of Ages' and 'Photograph' ended the show. As seen in the video below the intro to 'Women' was similar but not quite as dramatic as in 2013.
All songs played except the three Pyromania tracks were played for the first time in Honolulu. In all 8 songs made their 2018 tour debuts. Although there was no official opening act local DJ played music on the stage before the show (see Fan Photos).
