PHIL COLLEN On Playing DEF LEPPARD's HYSTERIA Album In Full

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen has been interviewed by Hawaiian radio and the full audio is available.

Phil spoke to David Lawrence for All Things Considered on Hawaii Public Radio.

The interview was conducted before the band arrived in Hawaii some time ago.

Phil talked about playing the Hysteria album in full in Hawaii, 2013 VIVA! Hysteria Residency, not celebrating the past, Hysteria album requests, memories Of 1983 Hawaii shows, 2018/2006 North American Journey Tour, guest appearances at DL shows, G3 Tour, Manraze/Delta Deep/Side Projects, Record Store Day EP, Abbey Road, Royal Albert Hall, Vivian's illness, Rick Allen's Drumming, being a vegetarian/animal lover, giving up alcohol, PETA Campaign Work, his pets, UK Ivory Ban, starting on guitar at 16, Deep Purple concert and meeting his heroes like Jimmy Page/Jeff Beck, The Who.

He mentioned the playing of the full Hysteria album which the band will begin to do again on Fridat in Honolulu for the first time since June 2013.

Playing Hysteria In Full/Only In Hawaii/Not USA

"Yeah but I didn't realise that. That's interesting you said that. Yeah that's pretty interesting. It is because if we do that it'll take a little bit longer. It'll go over for sure and when we're playing with Journey it's an hour and a half. Plus we didn't wanna do that with the Journey tour. You know we actually wanted to do like a Greatest Hits and all this other stuff and, you know, support the catalogue that's just been released on digital. So really that's it in a nutshell."

2013 VIVA! Hysteria Residency

"We've only ever done it, well twice. We done it in Vegas. We done VIVA! Hysteria a residency in Vegas and you know people came from all around the world from. You know people from Chile and Europe and everything. And we also done a festival in France just after that. But that's the only time we've ever done it. So this the first time as part of a tour and yeah it's gonna be really fun actually."

Not Celebrating The Past/Hysteria Album Requests

"No we're not very good at that. That kind of celebrating. I mean it's great and you should but we just don't do it you know. And to be quite honest even when we've. You know there was a request for the show we did in France and the Japanese tour, Australia, New Zealand and Britain thy all requested it. It's actually like promoter requests which is kind of weird. We went great. It's different for us 'cause it's vastly different from doing our regular thing."

"It was actually quite thrilling to actually do something that was almost theatrical. You know we approached it, we didn't just like we're a rock band and we're gonna blast this stuff out. We actually treated it as a very theatrical kind of output and it was really really super cool I gotta say."

Memories Of 1983 Hawaii Shows/Holidays

"That is definitely the only time. Yes for sure. I absolutely do. Actually me and Steve Clark wore a grass skirt for the encore. Absolutely. I distinctly remember and we played soccer against this local team and no one had any shoes on. I remember a bunch of it actually. Of course I've been back to Hawaii a few times since but usually Maui on holiday. Just a gorgeous place watching sunsets and all that stuff. So it's a, that was pretty much it really."
