Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show on the wonderful Planet Rock. Which this week comes to you all the way, for the last time in a while at least, from California because literally in a couple of hours time I am heading off to the airport and we are back home in preparation for the British/Irish tour which starts a week tonight in Dublin, Ireland. Can't wait for that and I can't wait to share the next sixty minutes with you. Starting with this beauty. The Sex Pistols, sort of."

Sex Pistols

"I say sort of when I mention the name of the band the Sex Pistols because in truth that is actually only Cooky and Jonesy. No Lydon, No Rotten, No Vicious. From The Great Rock And Roll Swindle. The song Silly Thing."

Nazz

"And just a few days ago I had the great pleasure of seeing fellow Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominee Mr. Todd Rundgren at a beautiful little theatre in a place called Monterey in California. He is touring and it is called An Unpredictable Night With... And basically what he's got is a setlist of 75 songs and he chooses 25, maybe 26 songs and he doesn't tell the band what he's gonna play. So they have to be really on their toes. He just turns around and whispers something and off they go. He played at least ten covers including Melanie, The Proclaimers. He even did a Monty Python song. But he really opened my eyes literally to a song that I had forgotten about for such a long time and it's a brilliant bit of work. This is the Nazz."

Note - This show took place on 16th November at Golden State Theater in Monterey, CA.

"And before that we heard the Nazz from their debut album in 1968, fantastic bit of rock psychedelia if you like or even garage psychedelia. The song Open My Eyes."

The Cars

"The lead off track from their 1978 debut album that is The Cars with Good Times Roll. Another song that Todd Rundgren played the other night."

The Tubes

"Now Todd Rundgren's touring band is fantastic. He has Kasim Sulton on bass who played for him many many years as a solo act and in Utopia. He has Greg Hawkes on keyboards from The Cars. And he also has on drums a guy called Prairie Prince who once played with this crowd. This is The Tubes."

"And before that The Tubes from their album Remote Control. Which coincidentally was produced by Mr. Todd Rundgren. the song we heard TV Is King."

Fanny

"As far as I'm concerned the current re-evaluation of that particular band is long overdue. They are Fanny. One of the first all female rock bands. Came out around 1970. Made some fantastic music. They were championed by the likes of David Bowie. And I think the connection there could well have been the fact that the plank spanker for David, Earl Slick, was married to the bass player Jean Millington for a while. But they did some fantastic music. I discovered them on a Flexi-Disc single that was given away free in 1972 by the NME. And that is the song that I just played there. Now days you can find it on a box set called First Time In A Long Time. It is Fanny. The song Blind Alley."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show all the way from California this week, last time in a while. Time for a little break and when we come back, we're gonna turn on the big generator with Yes."

Yes

"And before that we heard Yes from the album Big Generator in 1987 I think it was. The song Love Will Find A Way."

Foreigner

"You know for all the massive hits that they had worldwide year after year, I think that is my favourite Foreigner song. From the album Agent Provocateur that is Stranger In My Own House. Something that I will no doubt feel tomorrow when I walk through the front door and I get beady eyed by two cats who'll go: 'Oh hello stranger'."

Mott

"I do believe that I mentioned last week how excited I was at the prospect of the Mott The Hoople Mk II tour of the UK next April. Which brings of course Ian Hunter and the Rant Band back on stage with the likes of Ariel Bender and Morgan Fisher. Who happens to be one of my favourite pianists of all time. Check this out for example."

"And before that we heard Mott from their 1976 album Shouting And Pointing. A fantastic pianist is our Morgan Fisher. The song we heard Too Short Arms (I Don't Care)."

Fleetwood Mac

"This past Thursday night I took a trip up to San Jose. Yes, I do know the way as it happens. To see Fleetwood Mac. the new lineup of Fleetwood Mac which features Neil Finn on rhythm guitar and vocals and the mighty Mike Campbell from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers on lead guitar. What a fantastic show it was. It really works folks. If you've been in doubt don't be. They're coming to the UK next year. It's a fantastic show and they get to play some deeper tracks going back to the Danny Kirwin, Peter Green years. So it's a fantastic show. But that's one of their more recent songs I suppose. It's from about 40 years ago. That from the 25 Years The Chain compilation is Fleetwood Mac with Gold Dust Woman. A great song."

Note - This show took place on 21st November at the SAP Center in San Jose, CA.

The Kinks

"Now The Kinks are normally known for the fact that Ray Davies is an enormously brilliant songwriter end of. Well occasionally so is his brother."

"And before that The Kinks from yet another great box set. This time called Picture Book. The Dave Davies written song, once covered by Wreckless Eric, Death Of A Clown."

Wreckless Eric

"That is one of those songs that I have always always wanted to cover. About 18 maybe 20 years ago myself and Ricky Warwick almost covered it. And a good friend of mine who had, wait for it, Wreckless Eric as his wedding band. Told him that I was such a fan and he said let's do it as a duet. Well one day son I would love to do that. But for now that is Wreckless Eric on his own from a collection called Cash From Chaos. That is Whole Wide World."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, all the way from California, is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week god willing at exactly the same time. All the way from home. On the eve of our first show on our Irish and British tour."

"So until then I'm gonna leave you with this. Mk III Deep Purple. Title track, it is Burn. Until next week see ya!."
