Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show right here on the fantastic Planet Rock. Which this week is coming to you all the way from a very, very cold New York City. Good grief, you think the weather's cold in the UK. You should really try this. Actually you shouldn't, but I've got some great news if you're a Def Leppard fan that'll warm the cockles of anybody's heart. We have finally announced, yes the back catalogue all the way back to 1979 is finally available to download and stream. We've also announced out 60 date mammoth tour of the USA with Journey. AND finally, yes, after all the rumours have been put to bed we are bringing Hysteria and More to the UK and Ireland in December. I will fill you in as the show progresses. Let's go right back to the beginning. The first thing Def Leppard ever recorded."

Def Leppard

"Recorded at Fairview Studios in Hull in November of 1978 and released on the legendary Def Leppard Bludgeon Riffola label January 1979. 1,000 red label copies exist. Actually originals. There are a bunch of bootlegs out there. So if you're at a car boot sale be very careful if it's a bit old and scratched and bent it may be worth an investment because apparently they are trading for quite a few bob at the moment. But if it looks too good to be true, in other words it looks brand new, it probably is too good to be true."

Cheap Trick

"I mentioned at the top of the show that we are bringing Hysteria & More to the UK and Ireland in December. Quick run down of the dates if you'll allow me. 1st December we're in Dublin. 2nd Belfast. On the 4th we're in Cardiff. The 6th we're in London. On the 8th it's Nottingham. 9th it's Newcastle. On the 11th Glasgow. On the 12th we're in Manchester. On the 14th. Friday the 14th out home birth town if you like Sheffield. 15th we move over to Liverpool. And we finish in Birmingham on Monday the 17th of December. We are gonna make it a very special night and it's gonna be even more special because this crowd are gonna be opening for us."

"And before that we heard Cheap Trick who will be special guests to Def Leppard on the Hysteria & More tour in December. The album Standing On The Edge. The song Tonight It's You."

David Bowie

"The once extremely rare but not so much these days saxophone version of John, I'm Only Dancing which was a stand alone single for David Bowie and The Spiders From Mars back in 1972. I don't believe it was recorded during the Ziggy Stardust sessions but it was a hit as that album was taking off. Oddly enough these days it's a bonus track on the follow up album from 1973 Aladdin Sane."

New York Dolls

"Now I played Bowie because he's quite associated with New York having lived there for the latter part of his life. This next band are absolutely associated with New York. So much so they out the name of the city in the name of their band. This is the New York Dolls."

"And before that the New York Dolls from their second album in 1974. It's called Too Much Too Soon. Produced by Shadow Morton. The song, a fantastic version, Stranded In The Jungle ."

Ramones

"From their Mania collection that is the Ramones with Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio. Well of course we do, I'm on it and you're listening to it."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock this week coming to ya all the way from the Big Apple. Time for a little break and when we come back a gentleman whose name is so synonymous with New York City it's right up there with Andy Warhol and the Statue Of Liberty. And he's a bit of a rock and roll animal to boot."

Lou Reed

"And before that we heard the king of New York himself Lou Reed from his fantastic live album Rock And Roll Animal which featured brilliant guitar work by Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner who would go on to work with Alice Cooper. The song we heard Intro/Sweet Jane."

KISS

"These days they may be more associated with Los Angeles but they absolutely got their break as a band from New York and they are KISS. That is the title track of their 1999 return to form album Psycho Circus."

Blondie

"Now if there was ever a lady that came out of New York City and took the world by storm it was this one. And it's not Lady Gaga."

"And before that Blondie featuring the absolutely magnificent Debbie Harry. from their Greatest Hits collection. A song covered by Def Leppard on the YEAH! album back in 2006. We heard Hangin' On The Telephone."

Blue Oyster Cult

"Featuring New York scenester Patti Smith on vocals, that is fellow New Yorkers Blue Oyster Cult from the album Agents Of Fortune with The Revenge Of Vera Gemini."

Television

"Now another band that blew out of New York City about the same time as Blondie were this crowd. They weren't anywhere near as commercially successful. But just like the Velvet Underground, a decade before, they were hugely influential on musicians coming up at about the same time. Especially The Edge from U2. This is Television."

"And before that chalk and cheese really. Television from their debut album and for many, many years their only album. Marquee Moon we heard the song Venus."

Steely Dan

"Yeah I bet you didn't know Steely Dan were from New York 'cause I didn't either. They sound way more LA I'm afraid, but they are a great band. from the Steely Dan collection Showbiz Kids that is Kid Charlemagne."

Show Outro

"And that my friends from a very Arctic New York City is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you god willing next week at the same time."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this. Our touring partners for a mammoth 60 shows in the USA this summer. Journey, and I'm gonna see if I can talk Neal Schon into playing this one live 'cause it's a complete and utter stonker. This is Chain Reaction. Until next week see ya!."
