Show Intro

"Well that's it then. It's done. It's over and what a wild ride that was. Ladies and gentleman I'm back home after an incredibly successful UK and Irish tour, in fact the whole world. 83 shows since May. We had a blast. And before we get going I've got to say I have had literally, literally hundreds, hundreds and hundreds of emails from people that have been to the shows and telling me what a fantastic time they had. So thank you so much everybody for your support. It's been an amazing time as this sixty minutes will be. It's mostly festive, not all of it. Oh by the way I'm Joe Elliott you're listening to Planet Rock. And this is The Move."

The Move

"OK so I know what you're thinking what on God's green earth does The Move have to do with Christmas?. Well the answer is absolutely nothing at all, but if you were in Birmingham last Monday you know exactly where I'm going with this because Cheap Trick our special guests on this tour brought up the mighty Roy Wood to perform with them a couple of numbers. And that was one of the songs they did. Cheap Trick have covered that song in the past so the obvious thing to do was play California Man. That's the original version from their anthology collection. Roy Wood massive hero of Cheap Trick. Massive hero of Def Leppard as well. And when they'd finished California Man, with it being the run up to Christmas, well they were gonna play this as well weren't they? Course they were."

Wizzard

"And before that we heard, well we've heard it every year since 1973 and we will hear it every year till the day we all die. It is Wizzard featuring once again Mr. Roy Wood. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday."

Cheap Trick

"From last year's festive frolic through some classic Christmas covers. Boy what a mouthful. That is Cheap Trick. The album Christmas Christmas. The song Run Rudolph Run. Originally written and recorded by Chuck Berry. Once recorded in the mid 70s by Keith Richard."

Hanoi Rocks

"Now as uber fans of Cheap Trick as Def Leppard are it was fantastic fun watching 'em on the last couple of shows stood side stage. We were grinning from ear to ear because as I mentioned earlier they had Roy Wood up on stage with them in Birmingham. His home town of course. And also in London well they took it up a notch by bringing two guests out. I shall talk about them after we've heard this. This is Hanoi Rocks."

"And before that we heard Hanoi Rocks from the album Two Steps From The Move from 1984 produced by Bob Ezrin. Te song Creedence Clearwater Revival's classic tune Up Around The Bend. So why I hear you ask are you playing these not particularly festive tunes too. Well the reason is because Cheap Trick recorded a version of The 'In' Crowd on their latest album but they played it live at Wembley Arena with a guest guitar player who just happened to be Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. Fellow inductees in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame along with Def Leppard next year. So many many congratulations to Roxy Music. But they also brought up on stage to play harmonica on Run Rudolph Run which we just heard a couple of minutes ago. One Mr. Michael Monroe from Hanoi Rocks. Now that boy is Rock And Roll. You look up those words in the dictionary, they'll be a picture of Michael. It truly was a great festive way to end the tour."

Bryan Ferry

"From the album Another Time, Another Place that is Bryan Ferry's rocking take on the old Dobie Grey classic The 'In' Crowd."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's time for a little break and when we come back, more Christmas crackers. Starting off with Jethro Tull who have actually recorded three Christmas songs. So go on have a guess, the odds aren't too bad."

Jethro Tull

"And before that Jethro Tull who have actually recorded three Christmas songs. A Christmas Song, another Christmas Song and that one there which is probably their most famous. It is Ring Out, Solstice Bells."

Greg Lake

"Absolutely one of my all time favourite Christmas songs. That is Greg Lake with I Believe In Father Christmas."

Kristeen Young

"OK changing tack just a little bit here. Here's a couple of Christmas tunes from an American perspective. Starting off with Kristeen Young."

"And before that we heard Kristeen Young produced by Tony Visconti. The album is Music For Strippers, Hookers And The Odd Onlooker. Nuff said. The song I Won't Be Home For Christmas."

Sparks

"From their 1974 breakthrough album Kimono My House that is Sparks. I did say in the intro American. The fact is that Sparks were very much in 1974 a British band. They were just led by Ron and Russell Mayall who happened to be from Los Angeles. The song Thank God It's Not Christmas. Cheer up boys!."

The Greedies

"Right then back to Blighty. And oh to be a fly on the wall for this particular session. This is The Greedies."

"And before that we heard, well it was basically Brian Downey, Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy. Paul Cook and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols and for one drunken evening they became The Greedies and the song is A Merry Jingle."

Slade

"Yes I know it has been played to death but I'm sorry it just doesn't matter. I have been listening to that song since I was 14 years old. I've been falling over to it since I was 18 and no doubt will carrying on doing so until I shuffle off this mortal coil. That along with Wizzard cheer me up every Christmas. It is of course who else but Slade with Merry Xmas Everybody."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, on this very festive of Joe Elliott shows, is about it. Can I just add one more time what an absolute pleasure it has been to ring the Hysteria &' More tour to the UK and Ireland. It's something that we promised we would do five years ago and we have finally fulfilled our promise."

"As for the audiences best ever, period. In the 40 years this band has been performing this is the most successful and most enjoyable British and Irish tour that we have ever done. And that is some statement."

"So until June when hopefully some of ya will meet up with us again at Download. And until next week when we get together on the radio for some more fantastic tunes. I'm gonna leave you with this. With our first ever crack at a Christmas tune this is Def Leppard and We All Need Christmas. Until next week see ya! and Merry Christmas."

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. This week it is coming to you from Liverpool. What a city this is. Culturally magnificent and very very important because this is where it all started isn't it?. Come on 1962, the Fab Four, the Mersey sound. It was Ground Zero for British rock to go worldwide. They are gonna feature very heavily the Fab Four in tonight's sixty minutes individually and collectively. We're gonna start though four years after they split up with what is arguably maybe the first ever stadium rock anthem."

Paul McCartney/Wings

"From 1974 that is Paul McCartney and Wings. The album is Venus And Mars. e just heard the title track followed by the mighty Rock Show."

John Lennon

"So while Paul McCartney was getting it on with Wings. John Lennon was getting it on with Elton John."

"And before that from his collection John Lennon doing a brilliant duet with Mr. Elton John. The song Whatever Gets You Through The Night."

Cheap Trick

"Can I just say one more time what an absolute pleasure it is to have that band out on this tour with us and by the way everybody out there. You guys in Nottingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester and last night in our birth town of Sheffield. What a fantastic time we are having. The crowds are absolutely sensational. Thanks so much for your massive and incredible support. That is of course Cheap Trick from one of their many Best Of collections with Magical Mystery Tour. Originally of course recorded by The Beatles."

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame/Ringo Starr

"Some fantastic news came into the Def Leppard camp this week that we're actually gonna be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 29th March 2019. What an absolute honour to be in the same club as the likes of The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and of course The Beatles. Who are collectively and individually all inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Now it's 13 years since we were eligible to be nominated. It's the first nomination we've ever had. We got in straight away. And after 41 years of treading the boards and putting out albums we all know this stuff it just don't come easy."

"And before that Ringo Starr with what I believe was the first hit single by a solo Beatle. It's from his collection Photograph. The song It Don't Come Easy."

George Harrison

"I have to be honest I was maybe 10 years old when I first heard that song but it wasn't be George it was by Olivia Newton John who would a mere 8 years later go on to huge stardom starring with John Travolta in Grease. But that is the original version from his collection Let It Roll it's George Harrison What Is Life."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock which this week is coming to you from Liverpool. It's time for a little break, when we come back though we're gonna go back to the top of the slide, But this time it's a 2018 remix."

The Beatles

"And before that The Beatles from The White Album. That is the Giles Martin 2018 remix of the magnificent Helter Skelter."

Badfinger

"They were signed to The Beatles Apple label. They released that single in January of 1972. And it was produced by one Mr. George Harrison and they are Badfinger. The song magnificent bit of work called Day After Day."

The Beatnix

"OK are you up for a bit of a laugh because I am. Let me explain. I've always thought that my show I should play other than what other people play so you don't get Smoke On The Water. Sweet Home Alabama. Stairway To Heaven...usually. But in 1989 there was a show in Australia called The Money Or The Gun and if you performed on it and there were 22 episodes. So there are 22 different versions. You had to play Stairway To Heaven. In Australia there is an entire circuit of cover bands. There's The Australian Doors, the Australian 852's and there is a band called the Beatnix who are the Australian Beatles. You've gotta hear this."

"And we started off with The Beatnix. The Australian Beatles from the, well it's a DVD actually, but I'm sure you can find it on YouTube. It's The Money Or The Gun and it is their incredible Beatles-ish version of Stairway To Heaven."

David Bowie

"Before that veering slightly off The Beatles theme but not really from the city because that was David Bowie from his 1973 covers album Pin-Ups. The song Everything's Alright originally recorded by a Liverpool band called The Mojos. Coincidentally the drummer on Bowie's version was Ainsley Dunbar who for a brief period of time would actually play in the mojos five or six years previous to that."

Aerosmith

"Hey a triple shot man. Yes a three in a row. Don't do that very often. That was Aerosmith from 1987 the album Permanent Vacation and their amazing version of The Beatles song I'm Down."

Eric Clapton

"Right then over to the Albert Hall we go to George Harrison's Band Eric Clapton."

Show Outro

"If you've never seen the DVD I highly recommend you watch it. It is the Concert For George from the Albert Hall. It's a very emotional couple of hours with some fantastic performances by the likes of Paul McCartney and some wonderful stuff by George's hero Joe Brown. But there we heard Eric Clapton with George's band with a fantastic version of Wah Wah."

"And that my friends, from what I would consider ground zero of British rock going worldwide which is Liverpool , is about it for this week. Been a real pleasure as always. Next week you will no doubt see me trapped under a Christmas tree trying to retrieve at least one child or a cat because the British tour will be over and I will be back home hibernating. But we will get together for sixty minutes of no doubt festive fun."

"So until then I'm gonna leave you with what is my favourite ever Beatles song. This from The Magical Mystery Tour is I Am The Walrus. Until next week see ya!."
