Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show on where else? Planet Rock. And I'm home after a fantastic few days in London. The Royal Albert Hall last Sunday night. The final show of this years Teenage Cancer Trust shows. Wow, what an amazing show. Thank you so much everybody if you were there. Our first time in the Royal Albert Hall, I hope it's not the last. It was a wonderful, wonderful evening. And now I'm back home. We're mixing some live Leppard stuff. Doing some brand new Down 'n' Outz. No rest for the wicked ah?. Wow I must be really wicked. And talking of new music. Check this out. This is Vega."

Vega

"Nick Workman, the singer with the band Vega, was at the Royal Albert Hall last Sunday. He was bouncing up and down at the back apparently. So he must have been having a bit of a good time. But there he is with his band Vega from their brand new album Only Human. The song Worth Dying For."

Stone Temple Pilots

"Now here's another bit of new music albeit this song has been knocking around since November or so. But the album has just come out. Yes, they're back. They are the Stone Temple Pilots."

"And before that the Stone Temple Pilots from their brand new album of the same name. In fact the second album they have released called Stone Temple Pilots. The song that we heard, great bit of work, it's called Meadow."

Groundhogs

"Back in 1974 Polygram Records, as they were known, released a compilation album called Street Fightin' Men. I had a cassette which sadly has long been lost. But I'll never forget this one song that was on it amongst all the things like Sabbath and Lizzy was this brilliant bit of work and I finally tracked it down. And it is called Sins Of The Father and the band are called the Groundhogs. Originally from an album called Solid Gold."

Love

"Now time for a little bit of love. Arthur Lee style."

"And before that we heard Arthur Lee's Love from an album called Forever Changes and if you've never heard the original. You may be familiar with the song as it was once covered by UFO on their Lights Out album. The song is Alone Again Or."

Lynyrd Skynyrd

"When I was over in the States a couple of weeks back I watched a programme on one of these all night rock channels that was absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure if it is commercially available, but if it is try and check it out. It was called One More For The Fans. And it was essentially a tribute show to Lynyrd Skynyrd. They came on right at the very end to play Freebird, but before then it was just a rake load of people. They were all fans of Skynyrd but did a great job on all the songs. But the standout moment for me was the version of the song that we just heard that was performed by Greg Allman. It was absolutely to die for. The song we just heard Tuesday's Gone by Skynyrd from the album Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock. It's time for a little break and when we come back, we are gonna pay tribute to one of the best rock bass players ever."

Pat Travers

"And before that from his 1976 debut album we heard Pat Travers. The song Medley, Part 1 & 2 and I play that because just about a week ago the bass player Peter 'Mars' Cowling sadly passed away and what a player he was. I saw him back in 1976 when the Pat Travers Band opened for the Sensational Alex Harvey Band at the Sheffield City Hall for two nights. I got to know Mars a little bit when Def Leppard with Pat Travers in the States in 1980 and he was a wonderful guy he took us out on his boat actually when we were down in Florida. Very, very hospitable gentleman. He used to be back in the early 70s in a band called The Flying Hat Band. Kind of got nowhere but the interesting twist in fact is that the drummer was Steve Palmer. Baby brother of Carl Palmer from E.L.P. And the guitar player was one Mr. Glenn Tipton who would leave The Flying Hat Band to join Judas Priest. Hence splitting up The Flying Hat Band so that Mars could go and join Pat Travers. So no harm done and the rest as they say is history."

Be Bop Deluxe

"Well I haven't played 'em for a while so I thought I'd better give 'em a spin considering that they are one of my favourite 70s bands. They are Be Bop Deluxe, born and bred in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and they left to take on the world and they almost conquered it. From their album Modern Music that is Down On Terminal Street."

Bad Company

"And talking of history, here's a band that's got it in spades. This is Bad Company."

"And before that from 1976 the mighty Bad Company with the title track of their third album Run With The Pack."

The Cars

"Now when The Cars, for that is them that we just heard, released their debut album back in the summer of 1978 there was a lot of talk that specifically the backing vocals sounded a lot like Queen. But that was possibly likely due to the fact that it was produced by one Mr. Roy Thomas Baker who had in fact produced every Queen record up until then even though the band sounded a lot more new wave there was a sort of sound I suppose you could say it was a bit Queen-ish. But they had three massive hit singles off that album. Good Times Roll, Just What I Needed. I think the first one was and My Best Friend's Girl. And that song we just heard was originally the B-Side of one of those songs. And in my humble opinion it is the best track on the album by a country mile. The song is Moving In Stereo."

Show Outro

"And that my friends all the way from home, for at least a couple of weeks, is it for this week. Been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you god willing at the same time next week for more shenanigans and more fantastic music we would hope."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this. The night before Def Leppard played the Royal Albert Hall. I snuck off in a cab down to the 100 Club on Oxford Street to see a band that were playing their last ever gig in London. And the first time that they'd played there since 1978. And what a fantastic time it was. The band are the Doctors Of Madness. They are done. They finished on Tuesday, last ever gig. So Kid says. We'll see. We'll see. But here they are from their album Figments Of Emancipation with the most wonderful song Out. Until next week see ya!."
