The Joe Elliott Show #326 - Transcript

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's great to be with you once again. And what a week it has been since we were last together. I have literally just got off an aeroplane from a lightning quick trip to Tokyo in Japan where the 2016 Classic Rock Awards were held this year. Def Leppard were nominated and won Album Of The Year. And we were presented our award by the legendary actor, and sometimes guitar player, Mr. Johnny Depp. And if that doesn't give you an All Time High, then absolutely nothing ever will."

Def Leppard

"And what a collection of rock stars there were at the awards. You're looking at the likes of Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Joe Perry, Cheap Trick, the DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots. Phil Collen performed with his band Delta Deep. It really was an outstanding night. And I said at the top of the show, that song there All Time High from the latest Def Leppard album. Part of a collection of songs on an album that just won Album Of The Year. Doesn't get any better than that."

British Lions

"On a slightly sadder note I'd like to send out my love John Fiddler. All you people that are Mott The Hoople fans will know that the family tree of Mott The Hoople. It went to Mott to British Lions. John Fiddler was the singer in British Lions. Previously in a band called Medicine Head. He's just had a few heart problems. Had to cancel some shows. So again we're sending love just like we did last week to Mick Ralphs, we're sending it out to John Fiddler. This is the British Lions."

"And before that love going out John Fiddler from British Lions. From their debut album in 1977 we heard the song, once covered by the Down 'n' Outz, One More Chance To Run."

Dirty Tricks

"I've actually forgotten who I saw them open for. But I saw that band at the Sheffield City Hall as an opening act. And they were fantastic. The band are Dirty Tricks from their album Night Man. That is in fact the title track."

Slade

"OK some more tales from Tokyo next week but from now on this show is just gonna rock. Carrying on with a little bit of live Slade."

"And before that Slade fronter by Noddy Holder the actual gentleman who narrated said documentary. We heard from the Slade Live album, the song Hear Me Calling."

Sweet

"I just watched a documentary where Mary Whitehouse, who was a campaigner for all things that we would love and our parents would hate back in the 70s. Tried to get Teenage Rampage by the Sweet banned by the BBC because the lyrics were inciting riots. How tragic, the woman was a real pain in the you-know-what but luckily the BBC did write her a very firm and stern letter back saying I don't think so Mrs. Whitehouse. So we did get to hear the song on the radio and it was a hit. The band Sweet. The song Teenage Rampage."

Ian Hunter

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock. It's time for a little break. When we come back an absolutely classic song that's in the set right now by a gentleman on his latest but hopefully not his last UK tour. I'm talking about Ian Hunter."

"And before that Ian Hunter who is just wrapping up his latest, and hopefully not his last, UK tour. That is I believe song four in the current set. From his debut album in 1975 featuring some phenomenal guitar by Mr. Mick Ronson. The song The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nuthin' But The Truth."

Steely Dan

"If you were embarking on a long trip through the USA, down say Route 66, where you'd be jumping from one station to another as you change towns. I could guarantee you would hear that song at some point in your journey. It is such a popular song in the USA. It doesn't get much play in the UK. So I thought I'd give it a shot tonight. That is Steely Dan with a song called Dirty Work."

Creedence Clearwater Revival

"Well like Ian Hunter this guy has been around for a very long time and like Ian Hunter he is now also solo. You may remember him best for the band he had in the 60s. His name John Fogerty, the band Creedence Clearwater Revival."

"And before that Creedence Clearwater Revival. One of the few American bands to consistently have hit after hit after hit in the UK in the 60s and 70s. We heard the song Hey Tonight."

The Only Ones

"From the brilliant Cash For Chaos box set. That is The Only Ones Another Girl, Another Planet."

Wings

"Now here's a song that I had the great pleasure of performing with Paul McCartney's current live band for an album called The Art Of McCartney. The original version back in 1973. It was banned by the BBC. So maybe that pesky Mary Whitehouse did have some influence back then occasionally. But it's not banned on Planet Rock. So to take us HI Hi Hi here's Paul McCartney and Wings."

"And before that Paul McCartney and Wings from 1973. These days you can it on his Wingspan greatest hits collection. The song HI Hi Hi."

Rolling Stones

"Well I'm guessing Mary Whitehouse didn't have a radio back in the 60s because if she had have heard that song. I'm sure she would have tried to get it banned when you listen to the lyrics. Thank god she didn't. What an amazing bit of work that is. The Rolling Stones and Street Fighting Man."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. Bit of jet lag kicking in so I think I'd better go for a lie down. I shall be back with you next week god willing at the same time with more tales from Tokyo in tow no doubt."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this from 1974. This is AC/DC with their version of the old Them classic Baby, Please Don't Go. Till next week see ya!."
