The Joe Elliott Show #328 - Transcript

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's a pleasure to be with you once again. We have, in my humble opinion, what I like to think is sixty minutes of phenomenal music tonight. Some really weird stuff coming up later on in the show. But we're gonna start off with something that is generally thought of as the first ever punk single to be released way back in 1976. This is The Damned."

The Damned

"Saw them live in Sheffield back in the mid 70s. They were absolutely phenomenal. I was 15 years old. They were just completely from another planet. As were most of the New Wave bands. Could they play their instruments?. It didn't matter. The energy was unbelievable. Fantastic stuff. that is The Damned from their best of collection. The first ever Punk single released, New Rose."

Foo Fighters

"And if there was ever an American band that appreciated what a band like The Damned did. It would have been this crowd. This is the Foo Fighters."

"And before that we heard the Foo Fighters from the album One By One with Times Like These ."

Doctors Of Madness

"Were they punk?. Were they art?. Were they avant punk?. Who knows. Who cares. They were brilliant. The Doctors Of Madness there from their debut album Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms. The song B-Movie Bedtime."

Super Furry Animals

"Just a couple of weeks ago, myself and my good lady wife, threw a Halloween party for our friends and their kids. It lasted three or four hours. Which is me for three or four hours chasing 7/8 year old kids around going 'Please put that down. Don't touch that. No, that's very...no. Oh too late'. Well in the background was playing a Halloween CD which was supposedly spooky music. It was 99 percent dross but amongst the dross was this beauty, and I thought wow, this really sounds like Bowie. And to me it really has a great David Bowie influence. This is the Super Furry Animals."

"And before that the Super Furry Animals. Featured on a Halloween CD but that from their Zoom album The Best Of 1995 to 2016. The song Demons."

David Bowie

"And that definitely does sound like David Bowie because folks it is David Bowie. From his album Lazarus which is the soundtrack to the play that he did on Broadway just before he passed away. I've tagged it on to the end of my Blackstar album 'cause it's from the same sessions. The song When I Met You."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show right here on Planet Rock. It is time for a little break and when we come back it really, truly is bonkers time."

Sensational Alex Harvey Band

"And before that the Sensational Alex Harvey Band from their album Tomorrow Belongs To Me with the completely outrageous and truly, truly nuts The Tale of The Giant Stoneater."

Split Enz

"Well I did warn you before the break that it was gonna get a bit bonkers. And that surely is some of the most weird and out there rock music that we will ever hear. From a 1975 album called Mental Notes which was produced by Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. We heard Split Enz there with a song called Lovey Dovey."

Jethro Tull

"OK time for something slightly more standard, this is Jethro Tull."

"And before that Jethro Tull from the album Stand Up we heard Fat Man."

The Quireboys

"I'm really loving the new Quireboys album. Out of nowhere these guys have just got their mojo back. They went years without writing any new music and they've done like three or four studio albums in the last three or four years. They're just really on top of their game right now. They are The Quireboys. The album Twisted Love. The song we just heard Ghost Train."

George Harrison

"Now you may remember this song as a hit single for the drummer in the Beatles. Mr. Ringo Starr. Here's the original version. Performed and written by George Harrison."

"And before that why did George Harrison give that song away to Ringo Starr. It doesn't matter really because it was a hit anyway. The song It Don't Come Easy."

Ian Hunter

"Couple of songs back to back right there that beg question why?. Why did you never like the day when you were released. On that particular song, midnight I believe it was recorded. It's an outtake from The Artful Dodger sessions. It's Ian Hunter and it's featured on a CD called Experiments which is one of 32 discs in his new box set which is called Stranded In Reality. Which has just been released/."

Show Outro

"And that my friends for this week is about it. Been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week god willing at the same time."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this crowd. Who won Best New Band at the Rock Awards in Japan just a couple of weekends ago. This from the album Everybody Wants is The Struts with Where Did She Go. Until next week see ya!."
