The Joe Elliott Show #327 - Transcript

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. And I say the Joe Elliott show, but in actual fact this week it is almost the Phil Collen show because last weekend at the rock awards in Tokyo, Japan. Phil led, for most of the evening at least, one of the best house bands that you will ever hear. We're talking Ray Luzier from KoRn on drums, the DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots. Rob on bass, Dean on guitar. Tommy Hendriksen on guitar from the Alice Cooper band. Great singing, different styles because he was representing different bands, from Jeff Keith from Tesla. We had guest appearances from the likes of Richie Sambora and Orianthi. Rudolf Schenker from the Scorpions. Joe Perry from Aerosmith. Even Johnny Depp played guitar. The awards were presented brilliantly by Dave Mustaine. And let's not forget that in the building we had the big guns of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. But the whole evening started off with a fantastic 20 minute set by a band whose name was set in stone in Tokyo, Japan in 1979. They are Cheap Trick."

Cheap Trick

"From their 1979 live album Live At The Budokan. That is Cheap Trick who played that very song last weekend in front of 8,000 screaming Japanese fans. And wow did they go down just as well as they did on the live album. Cheap Trick I Want You To Want Me."

Scorpions

"So Cheap Trick took their bow and went off to what people do at these things. Socialise with everybody else that's backstage. And what a great bunch of guys they are. But as they disappeared into the night, on came the house band. They were joined by Rudolf Schenker from the Scorpions."

"And before that the Scorpions. One of two songs that Rudolf Schenker played on the night. That version from Love At First Sting. The song Rock You Like A Hurricane."

Tesla

"Enter Phil Collen into the proceedings and why not because that particular song was produced by Phil and he it on the night. The song is Save The Goodness. the band Tesla, it's their latest song. It will be featured on their new album which will be coming out in 2017."

Stone Temple Pilots

"Now this is where it started getting interesting because now Phil is comfortably leading the house band. He took the guitar away from himself and just sang this one. Yes, he made a great attempt at being Weiland. This is the Stone Temple Pilots."

"And the song we heard before that was the Stone Temple Pilots from their album Purple. A song interpreted very well on the evening by Mr. Phil Collen. The track Interstate Love Song."

Led Zeppelin

"The vocals were back with Jeff Keith on that particular song. Though of course not the version we just heard. That's the original, Led Zeppelin, from the album Houses Of The Holy with Dancing Days. And Jimmy was there but Jimmy didn't play on that. Jimmy didn't really wanna play. He was for his best mate of almost 60 years, Jeff Beck. What a great time he had standing at the side of the stage admiring these musicians along with me, because I didn't sing either."

Delta Deep

"And we'll be back with more Phil Collen, and a little bit of me, after the break because we're gonna feature Delta Deep doing a great version of an old Deep Purple classic."

"And before that, staying in the delta, we had Delta Deep from their debut album. A cover of a classic Deep Purple song Mistreated."

Leon Russell

"Just stepping away from the awards show for a while to pay tribute to a fantastic musician who passed away this week. He was such an influence on the likes of Ian Hunter in the early days. He was such an influence on Elton John that when they finally worked together, Elton got so emotional that he actually burst into tears and had to walk out of the studio. I'm talking about Leon Russell and there we just heard possibly his most famous collaboration with Joe Cocker. A song called Delta Lady."

Def Leppard/Johnny Depp

"OK so back to the awards show and out of the shadows steps the man that you and I have seen many times dressed as a pirate. He was a little more rock and roll this week. He was Johnny Depp and with Phil Collen and the house band he ripped through this."

Aerosmith

"And if you haven't guessed already after a couple more songs Johnny Depp and Tommy Hendriksen doing Alice Cooper and Stone Temple Pilots material. Out stepped Joe Perry to play the classic Aerosmith song Sweet Emotion."

The Beatles

"I mentioned earlier how the band Cheap Trick performed for 20 minutes and then went off to socialise. Somebody got a hook round Robin Zanders's neck and dragged him out unrehearsed to do this particular number."

"And before that we heard The Beatles with a song from the album Abbey Road, Come Together. Which had just about everybody on stage and was sung brilliantly by Mr. Robin Zander."

The Yardbirds

"A song associated with many people on the night. of course Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page but also a song that had been performed in he past by Aerosmith. So Joe Perry knew that thing inside out too. It is Train Kept-A-Rollin' and that;s the original version by The Yardbirds."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a pleasure as always. It's been an extra special pleasure really to look back over something that in my lifetime. I may never see the likes of again. The great news is, for you and I, we can share this together again one day because it was filmed and no doubt it's gonna be broadcast on a TV channel somewhere near you, sometime pretty soon. So keep a look out in your local paper."

"I'm gonna leave you with this. What a wonderful thing it was to see Jimmy Page give an award. A lifetime achievement award to Jeff Beck. They've known each other for sixty years. Jeff came out, he was fronting the house band and I was so proud to be able to watch my colleague in Def Leppard, Phil Collen, play guitar with his hero on a song that meant so much to him. And hopefully all of us. This is Jeff Beck from the album Truth with Beck's Bolero. Written by Jimmy Page. What a great way to end the night. Till next week see ya!."
